    Hi Everyone,

I have been reading this forum for some time and have finally decided to start my own training log.

I am 28 years old, 6 feet tall, and right now am weighing about 215lbs. I competed in my first meet this past March. It was an APF meet and I competed raw in the 220lb class. I did the meet on pretty short notice and was able to Squat 435, Bench 285, and Deadlift 500 for a total of 1220. I am planning on doing a RPS meet on November 11 and hope to exceed all of those numbers by a good margin.

Currently I am running a pretty straightforward Texas Method template. I am coming off of a recovery week and started back with some moderate weights. Here is yesterdays workout:

    Mon 8/20
    Squat 5x5 with 335
The first three sets were easy, the last two were a grind. Need to take more rest in between.
    Press 5x5 with 162.5
    Felt solid
    Deadlift 400x5
    Easy

Also, I am very excited to be attending the SS seminar in Brooklyn next month and I look forward to meeting anyone who may be attending.

Wanted to update my first page to include the competitions I have done since starting this log:

    November 2012: RPS Meet

    Squat - 440
    Bench - 300
    Deadlift - 510

1250 total in the 220 weight class

    July 2013: RPS Meet

    Squat - 500
    Bench - 330
    Deadlift - 600

1430 total in the 242 weight class

    Weds 8/22
    Light Squat 5x2 with 265
    Light Bench 5x3 with 215
    Chins BWX14, 12, 11

Nothing special tonight, everything felt good. Chins were a little tougher than normal, I was expecting to be able to squeeze out a few more reps.

A few days late getting this up...

    Fri 8/24
    Squat 375x5

First three reps felt great, on the 4th I felt like I got into my knees a little too much, the 5th rep was a grind.
    Press 192.5x3
All three reps were strong but my balance felt a little off
    Power Clean 220x3x5
First day back with triples after doing some timed singles for a few weeks. All the sets felt strong and fast.

I hope everyone had a good week

    Training Update...
It has been a hectic few weeks. Around the time of starting my log I began a new full-time job that has me pretty busy. Due to my schedule I have been forced to modify my programming so that I can train in a timely manner while on a break at work. I began running more of a 5/3/1 style of programming that has been going very well. I have been feeling strong and am recovering much better than I was previously running the TM.

Also, tonight was my first night back in the gym since attending the SS Seminar in Brooklyn this past weekend. I learned a ton and am excited to get back in the gym. I am also 8 weeks out from my RPS meet on November 11 and tonight marked my first night of serious preparation.

    Weds 9/19
Power Clean worked up to 200x3
Easy, I have been using these to warm-up my deadlifts
Deadlift worked up to 390x3 then hit 425x1, 445x1, and 465x1
All of these felt really good, I know I had more in me on the singles but had some discomfort in my right quad on my last two sets so I played it safe
Press worked up to 175x3 then hit 185x1 and 195x1
I wanted more on these but I felt a little off with my hips
    Chins BWx10, 10, 12
All dead hang, touched chest to bar every rep

    Pretty happy with this

    Fri 9/21

Squat worked up to 365x3, then hit 385x1, 405x1, 425x1
All of the singles felt relatively easy, I was working hard on keeping my tightness and cutting my depth off a little bit as last week at the seminar Tom told me I was way too low
Bench worked up to 245x3, then hit 265x1, 275x1, 280x1
Paused all the singles, kind of screwed up the 275 which is why I only went up 5 pounds on the last set
    Chins BWx13,11,11,9,7

    Overall pretty happy with this

    Mon 9/24

Pretty beat tonight and still working on my BBT3 Press technique...
Power Clean worked up to 190x5
Just warming up my Deadlift with these
    Deadlift worked up to 365x10
All paused and reset every rep
    Press worked up to 165x6
Pretty upset with these, weight was not heavy. I keep screwing up the pause at the bottom.
    Chins BWx10, 10, 11

Hey JP, I'm quoting what you wrote on my log here:

I am registered for the RPS meet November 11 out on LI. My goals as of now are 455, 305, 525 but hopefully I can push those up a bit over the next 7 weeks with some of the things I learned at the seminar. I will keep you posted.
1285 at 220 would be pretty solid - 65lbs more than your March total, correct? See if you can push that to 1300. A nice round number, you'll feel good about it. 5 more lbs in each lift is all you need.

You mentioned switching to "5/3/1 style" programming - is it your own concoction based on 5/3/1?

A very nice basic routine you have going, John! I like it. Just the basics worked hard. Hope to see you posting some big numbers at a comp that you prepared for!
