That means Robles has ~1.2% of the audience there that Mattie does. No one gives a fuck about Robles, comparatively. And the fact that she bombed the snatch is a goddamn insult to the meet, imho.
    Moi, aussi.

Make Nationals of the Olympic year the sole trial. It's a far better litmus test of the numbers you could be putting up in the Olympics than what you did in international competition 1-2 years ago. In the case of Robles, her bombout is probably the result of an injury, which means she likely won't be improving her total but fighting to get back to it in the coming months. Chad Wesley Smith also makes the point in the aforementioned podcast that the added pressure of having only ONE event to qualify more closely resembles the high stakes conditions of the Games.

I'm going to be honest - Rodgers has an argument for going based on her ability as a Lifter but WTF does her Social Media presence have to do with it?

If Robles at least executed both lifts competently, I wouldn't use the social media argument as a singular justification.
I get what you're saying, but is this a slippery slope towards the USOC/USAW making Social Media reach a qualifying factor? Surely that's not in the best interests of anyone

And again, it's not like there isn't already a lot of stupid bullshit going on behind closed doors with IOC/USOC/USAW in a more general sense. Like the rule made after the fact that made the one girl an automatic qualifier.
I just think that if "marketability" is going to be a selection criteria it's got to openly be a criteria. Otherwise you aren't doing anything to improve the "dodginess" of USAW. I think we agree that selection should be more transparent?

What about if the trial results were reversed? Say Mattie bombed her snatch, Robles sets a new American record and PRs her total. Robles still lacks marketability, but is performing well in the lead to the Games. This is where marketability becomes murky for me. Are USAW better off picking the marketable lifter to improve image of the sort, or picking a lifter who could be comparative at the games?

There's no clear cut yes or no, I guess. Are USAW bound by association with the US Olympic committee to aim for medals at the Olympics, or are they independent enough to do what they want?

    MGilchrest,

You are talking as if Robles has never "performed competently" at a World level - I'd agree that if her bombout was due to injury that needs to be looked at, and I am sure it will.

Lulzorzz didn't know anyone cared much about this nontroversy. I'm pretty indifferent the whole thing, since we all know that the Olympics are absolutely not the highest level of IWF competition; for that you want the previous year's IWF Worlds, or the Olympic year's national championships of "real" lifting countries, you know, the blurry ones filmed at what appears to be converted basketball courts, where everyone shows up a weight class too high and juiced to the gills, and unofficially crushes world records while dumpy middle-aged guys in rumpled suits watch sternly. And really, all this is moot once you think about it since no one on our depth chart has what it takes to medal anyway, so........

From a marketing standpoint, well, who watches the Olympics on TV during primetime instead of just streaming in HD the desired events, commercial-free? It's unsophisticated 45-year-old Midwestern mothers of three. NBC knows this (hell, the primary sponsor is Proctor and Gamble, makers of all things housewifey), which is why they televise nothing but manufactured sob stories punctuated by the occasional bit of swimming, track, and a helluva lot of beach volleyball. Consistently absent of any coverage: all the cheap sports that allow grimy 3rd World countries a fighting chance, e.g. lifting, wrestling, judo, boxing. So in that respect, maybe Mattie should have stayed a gymnast and been a part of some sort of Fab Five team that visits the White House in September? But I guess there is the bit where her dad died when she was little and she has an underboob tattoo of his last letter to her, so.....split the difference, I guess?

From a general, non-Olympic standpoint, I am actually not sure she's all that marketable outside of the gym community. First, again, no one cares about lifting and one person isn't going to uproot the popular sports. More importantly though, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest the blasphemous idea that most non-lifters would not find her attractive. I've showed her vids to many of my ladyfriends, and far from being inspired to lift and get dat dere Mattiebody, they ALL default to something along the lines of, "Oh she's cute I guess but WTF is up with her [insert body part]?" Usually they hate on her shoulders, with thighs and bust a close second and third. No thought is given to her actual performance. The guys usually nonchalantly drop an obnoxious, "Meh 6/10 whatever" which is obviously code for, "Fuck this bitch for being stronger than me." I get that we stupid meatheads are popping semis at the thought of a muscular woman snatching (snicker) 105kg (and almost 109!) and jerking (double snicker) 133 and making a spirited attempt at 141, but the average male is a butthurt little goober whose wishes he had Travis Fimmel's body and jacks off to 360p pornhub clips, so.....

That's the really long way of me saying that while Mattie is stupidhot and beastmode^2, I don't really care who represents America at the shitshow that is the Olympics as long as Cristina Iovu and Lidia Valentin will at least entertain the idea of the three-way I am proposing to them on Facebook.

    Training:
My back was still pretty fatigued, but again, my life is bullshit till I do at least 106/134/Yulia Paratova, so I made a go at it and got:
    Snatch:
    40kgx3
    50x3x2
    60x3x2
    70x1
    80x1
    85x0
Yulia x not even in my wettest dreams

Everything was feeling reasonably okay, and while I was not my fastest, technique was reasonably on point such that I did not have to save any lifts, but I fell off the wagon for 85, made a pussy effort at it, and quit. Told myself I'm going to save myself for tomorrow. Yea right.

    Storytime:
Ran into a girl I dated briefly several months ago (story vaguely mentioned either here or in E&P??) before she went MIA (turns out she was seeing at least two other dudes at the time). She was pretty hot back in November, but somehow gained something like 30lbs since and is now chubby, bordering on obese, and, for the first time in years, single and confused. If she builds a negative-revenge-body, then....I have a revenge body?!?

You know it. No response so far from either feeler. Mattie's putting up some pretty angry hashtags, so I'm guessing she'll be setting some rage-fueled PRs in the next few months to come...guess i got my work cut out for me. Also, I was wrong: I thought she did 101 or something at trials, but actually it was 106 for a new American -69 record. FUCK. FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK. I have been doing this shit on and off (emphasis on this part, I guess...) for FIVE YEARS and am nowhere near that shit. GODDAMMIT. I haven't been following Jordan's log recently, but last I checked, he did 105. That means that Mattie is able to hang with, and might very well be ahead of, a guy who can squat nearly 600 and pull over 700. Holy schmitz.

    Okay ahem:

So while everyone went to happy hour, I snuck off to do:

    Snatch push press:
    40kg x5
    50x5
    60x5
    70x5
    80x5

    OHS:
    40x3
    50x3
    60x3
    70x1,3
    80x1

For the 1's the weight didn't feel heavy; I just lost my concentration after rep 1, rushed rep 2, and had to bail out from under. For 70 I was able to get my act together and do it right, but for 80, CG called me wanting to go eat, and I was starving by then, so food it was.

Note: Just found out Mattie snatch balanced 115kg. Time to blowbang shotguns.

Life PR: I finally know how to tie a bow tie.
Second life PR: Drunk chick at a bar grabbed me by said tie and tried to pull my face into her crotch. CG & Co. jumped in though and separated us with a "Dude you don't want to do that." Fucking cockblocks. Later I see that girl and some teenage-looking stranger who had just been standing there clutching a beer against his chest running into an Uber. Hope he enjoys dat dere free poon.

More shotgun orgies: Look at THIS trainwreck of a discussion:
    The diet and exercise thread

In which users thecharlessg and lesserblackdog question the merits of getting goddamn big, strong, and conditioned, with charles dragging out a condescending msingh type diatribe about just how muscular a person can get. Fact: 100% of all people who enjoy internet arguments about BF% do not actually train in any capacity. It takes about ten pages before we find out these idiots don't even know what exactly "gear" means, but feel pretty good about discussing their use. A few users (Stronglifts types it seems) try to act as the voice of reason but it seems like they back down in the interest of preserving the forum's decorum when they realize these retards aren't about to be reasoned with.

    Our heroes:
    Lesserblackdog:

This guy is actually on TRT i.e. he has a script to get juiced out of his mind if he wants, but nonetheless looks like the absolute last guy you want on your zombie apocalypse team.

    thecharlesg:

Confession: I love this guy's taste in business casual attire...but otherwise he's kind of a bitch who fancies himself a S&C expert, does 3 sets of 10 with pink dumbbells while criticizing fat people at the gym, and is hoping to drop 15lbs and hit 140lb at 6'1" by the end of the year.

Not exactly models of strong useful men, but right about par for a forum in which adult males spend all their free time playing dress-up, I guess. I hate all the peoples in all my hobbies. Present company excluded, obv., but one trip into E&P and I'm like, "Oooooh right I forgot, meatheads tend to be dicks."
