Holy shit how many of you jacked and tanned gentlemen are watching that show???? I saw season 1 because all my co-workers were watching it, but I couldn't really get into it. And if we're going to keep it real re: the Deschanels, I'm a Bones kinda guy myself. Mildly racist: Tried to jump ahead seasons (we have all the DVDs in the house, go figure....) and didn't notice the Coach => Winston switcheroo....whoops.

Actually now that you mention it though, last week the Nick Miller dumped her sort-of boyfriend, a good-looking British lawyer or barrister or some shit like that, for no apparently reason. Later she admitted, "Ehhhh he barely exercises and never lifts. I just squatted 135 for 10 for the first time [she's about 5'8" 120lbs with no training history, so I was actually kind of impressed-ish] and the whole time, he was in a bar pretending he likes whiskey. Fuck that noise, you know? I mean, I hated that my thighs were bigger than his and he wasn't even going to try." I was like, "LOL so he was in a bar while you were under one?" She stared at me for a bit like I was insane, and then went, "No. I was at the gym. He was at the bar. How can anyone be under the bar?" X_X

TL;DL: No squat no snatch??? Holy shit is this reality?

Speaking of which, I did just that:
    Snatch:
    40kgx3x2
    50x3x2
    60x3x2
    70x3

    Squat:
    70x5
    110x5
140x5x3 Few pauses mixed in. My new gymbuddies didn't know that I like pausing here and there and would shout encouragement only for me to anticlimactically stand up @ RPE 0. Does that count as trolling?

So yea I can squat more than the average DYEL European goober but at the same time, Nick Miller here says things like "let's do shots" and "I'm not sure whether or not I like him but he's a personal trainer which is a major plus," is disappointingly impressed by mundane things such as Grey Goose and guys wearing clean shirts on dates, and is generally reminding me that hot 25-year-old girls (and guys too...especially guys...) don't usually have much to offer besides Vitamin P, so there's that. My sister be like, "So you're spoiled by CG. Why don't you just marry her and be done with all this?" Yes but no.......................and not gonna lie: going down on tren-soaked girl-penis is........kind of on my bucket list. For gathering scientific data, such as quantifying the rippling in her delts as she pins my face up against her junk.

E&P: Not gonna lie, this Trump shit is hilarious and terrifying. I just saw a grainy video of him walking backstage at the RNC mugging for the camera while flanked by bodyguards (in ill-fitting Made in China suits...and quit buttoning that bottom button, dipshits) and was like, "Oh shit, he's not Hitler, but he is Mussolini." Yes yes it's generally unnecessary to attribute to malice that which can be explained by simple stupidity, but he's not stupid, so what then? This self-immolation has to be some long con in which he ingratiates himself to.........to the world's fascists, right? I guess we can expect Trump casinos to start sprouting in shitholes like Damascus ans Tripoli soon or something? Somebody aware me.

I started watching because I wanted Zooey Deschanel to sit on my face for hours and this was the closest I could get to that, but I stayed for 4 seasons due to Schmidt and Nick's combined charm. At point I set up a douchebag jar in my kitchen as a decoration.

If Nick Miller is impressed by mediocre life-having 24 year old personal trainers, send her my way so I can guest star for a short story arc.

I like how the show got better when Zooey left for her kid. I thought Meaghan fox would suck. She was awesome.

My old lifting buddy looks like a short Schmidt. With bigger arms. And not ripped. Like comically so. He even dresses the same.

Here's some worst than mediocre lifting:

    Jerk:
20kg x hundreds including tons of warmup movements that I've never done before (jerk balance, press from jerk, jerk from split, etc.

    40x3x4

By then it had been over an hour and my shoulders were roasted so we cut it off.

I'm not really on any program, but that will change soon. This place seems to have a bit of the mindset LSUS adapted from the Soviets, i.e. technique is #1, but you'll never get anywhere without being jacked and tan. So lots of repetitions with snatch and CJ, followed by lots of squats, presses, and yes, deadlifts. I even saw some others in a strength block who did nothing but slow lifts. We'll see how this goes..... The Pole says I must snatch 100 and CJ 130 ASAP so as to finally stop embarrassing myself.

I know most of you guys aren't ever going to get a bespoke or made-to-measure garment, but note that Men's Wearhouse, yes, Men's Wearhouse, that place where as a rite of passage we grossly overpaid for our first suit in a baggy three-button black cut, that MW is getting with the times, sort of. They came out with their "high-end" Joseph Abboud line a few years back, featuring all the amenities not formerly associated with their brand, such as half-canvas chest, Bemberg lining, Italian fabric, all in a sleeker cut and made in New England. Well, I went in and got one the other day (pretty sure I stumbled across a pricing error, given that it was $103, well short of the line's usuall $600-ish.....shhhhhh....and took it for a whirl. It's nice!! Fabric much softer and lighter than their normal fare, pretty good fit off the rack (only needed to have the waist taken in slightly), in a subtle plaid that looks like a solid light grey from a distance. Actually, the only difference between this and something from something else in the same pricepoint, e.g. SuitSupply or J.Crew, was a weird crinkle in near the chest pocket, which a tailor can easily correct.

    Take a gander:
    Joseph Abboud Collection

But only the ones marked Made in USA. The others, and the JOE diffusion line, are the usual wool-blend, polyester-lined crap.

Welp, today was kind of a wash. Kicked things off with a root canal performed by a Tom Cruise clone, which was kind of amusing. Then spent all day on my feet and then finally got a taste of DC traffic and damn near parked my car on the 395. At first I thought it was poorly-designed roads, but more and more now I am convinced that traffic here sucks because drivers are fucking assholes and as a result of all the jockeying and jostling it takes a bit longer to merge and change lanes, which snowballs upstream. Traffic engineers feel free to correct me.

I got to the gym with about 30 minutes till closing time, and managed:

    Squat:
    70x5
    110x4
    140x3 all paused
    140x5
    145x5

and called it. Legs felt fine but my upper back was sore and knotty from the jerks bleh.

NM here says she wants to go shopping tomorrow and by that it means I'll be sitting around at Express waiting for her and staring with bemusement at their mens department, you know, that anorexic one in which I am a size XXL in most things and can't put on any of their blazers at all.

Hahah it's fine I got time. Gym was closed all weekend for a clinic so I was SOL anyway. In addition to General Express, I ended up getting acquainted with Mr. Aldo and Mr. Steve Madden, and being told that my suggestions, i.e. find women's versions of traditional menswear were "too frumpy."

EDIT: Not really getting where this "frumpy" thing is coming from:

Pretty much the only message I am getting from any of these ladies is, "We both know that anything you can do I can do better," so not sure what the problem is....

But yea, frumpiness aside, I noticed that menswear is impossible to get wrong if you stick with gray trousers, tan chinos, dark blue jeans, blue shirts, white shirts, solid polos, a blue two-button suit, a fun sportcoat, and two pairs of shoes, a more formal black one and a more casual brown one. You can almost get away with assembling your uniform by randomly mixing and matching those items. But womenswear is mostly overpriced outfit-specific crap, with no guidelines at all. It's like R&D: men are in development or even applications, where you're just tweaking and optimizing a more or less functional product, whereas women are in research, where you have a ton of room to play around and you get bullshit 99% of the time. So I figured, okay not long ago, I was wearing black shirts with red ties and an ill-fitting three-button suit that my dad got me at Men's Wearhouse in 2003, but it was relatively easy to learn past that; maybe now I can do the same for womenswear? My browser is now exploding with tabs for various women's style blogs. Lots and lots of chaff and women synonymizing "look good" with "take clothes off," but there are a few useful nuggets here and there. Distillation ain't easy.....

    TRAINING:
Okay with that out of the way, realtalk. I started a new program today, and it's a bit different. More elaborate exercises, but not MUCH more elaborate. There's a big emphasis on conditioning for this first block though, for GPP reasons and also that a conditioned guy trains more efficient AND it might actually come in handy for situations such as following yourself at a meet? I recall reading somewhere that a Bulgarian lifter, maybe Stoitsov, had a lot of time between lifts at a meet and spent the whole time staying warm by doing light lifts and jumping around the room, a far cry from the sweaty guy lying on the floor with a towel over his head.

    I did:
    Snatch third-pull + OHS 1+1:
    20kg x3x3
This was new, and different from the Pole's "just high pull and go under!" The bar is on blocks at around stomach height, and the body starts at full extension with bent elbows. A quick twitch of the traps and elbows pulls the bar up slightly, and the lifter drops under. So kind of like a drop snatch, but starting with the barbell in front.

Hang power snatch + hang snatch 3+2
    40x1
    50x1
    55x1
    50x1x2
    With 2 minutes rest #crossfit

LOLOL fahves! I was pretty roasted after these reps. Never done fives before for the quick lifts, esp with little rest.

    Snatch deadlift:
    90kgx8
    110x8
    120x8x2

LOL eights?!?!? I was told to titrate the weight and probably underdid it, but don't want to destroy myself just yet; there's always time to ramp up on week 2.

I was also supposed to do pull-ups, which I figured would be a shitshow. I was able to do 16 from a dead hang once, at BW 180 and not much barbell work, but tehse days I figure I'll be lucky to get 5. Unfortunately the gym closed, but I'll be sure to get them in. Might be fun to see if I can't get to the elusive 20 mark....

So yea, some new exercises, but definitely "stronger is better" and no one's technique Nazi. Guys in the middle of strength blocks did a bunch of presses and squats, and yes, deadlifts. When I asked about how much to emphasize strength, they told me, "Depends on the lifter. Some people just need to squat all day and for me to yell at them to keep the bar close, others need more exercises and cues." And these folks are as USAW as they come. So maybe Rip has had an effect?? No idea, doesn't matter.

Okay time to watch today's Olympics. Rumor has it there was a giant baller move in the 62s. No spoilers please.

Watch for the Tunisian (out maybe Turkish) lifter who had to follow himself x 3 in the c&j. Poor bugger, he looked gassed

I should have spent more time looking for a feed. My bros were giving me the play by play in our group chat. I was left in the dark. Then of course it devolved into a "when is lidia lifting" "oooh she looks fun"

    starting strength coach development program
Hory sheet. Moar conditioning mode. Gym was like 105 degrees and 110% humidity...

    Squat:
    20kg x10
    60x10
    90x10
    113x10x3

    With 2-3 minutes rest.

    Push press:
    20kg x10
    40x10
    50x10x3

    Same 2-3 minutes rest.

The weights might be low but tonnage was way more than I could do with 3x5. I asked for a preview of what's next and was told that it'd be blocks of 5,3,1. Yea it's not our beloved LP => TM, but hey, it's different and I'm having fun so we'll see. Maybe I'll ask if I can squat bigger weights on top of this? Depends on how I feel tomorrow, I guess. That said, my legs are DOMSing now....very interesting sensation.

Hey so this is fun: Remember this shit?

I always just thought Miami Vice was a goofy buddy-cop show, and had no idea until now that it revolutionized menswear in the 80s. Well, the other day I was watching the show on Hulu while sweating my balls off in this swamp when it occurred to me, "Hey Sonny Crockett lives in a sweaty city too... I wonder if I can pull off his outfit....or will I just look like a Cuban douchebag.....?" [ellipsis level: MBasic] Definitely didn't want to shell out $$ for what might end up being a costume. Besides, you're suppose to sweat, get shitfaced, do coke, and beat hookers in a linen suit, right? Plus what's the point of shelling out for British-level detailing on something meant to look the exact opposite of a stiff upper lip? (Plus Brits don't know shit about what to do once the mercury rises past 65F) So I looked around and found that Macy's was starting to dump their summer stuff, and with the right stackage of codes, I was able to order a 3-piece (LOLWUT) and an extra pair of pants even, in their house brand, for like $90 shipped. Worth it for just the individual items alone...now to confirm that I am indeed not cool enough to pull off that look.
