We recently added our first lady lifter to Black Iron Loft. We are now 5 lifters strong. I thought it was time to have a mission statement, so I "wrote" the following which is handed out to the lifters and also hangs on the walls. It is almost entirely plagiarized, parroted, and paraphrased from the writings and words of Rip, Justin Lascek, Jordan Feigenbaum, Alexander Cortes, and probably others whose words have stayed in my head although their names have escaped me.

Without further ado, Black Iron Loft Manifesto

Strength is our birthright. Strong is the normal phenotypic expression of the human genotype. Black Iron Loft exists as a safe haven for the pursuit of strength, both for its own sake, and for the positive effects it has on every aspect of the lifter’s life.

Training for strength using compound, full-range of motion exercises, loaded progressively with barbells is the path we choose in our pursuit of health, stress relief, performance improvement, character development, and increased self-confidence.

Muscular size is pursued at Black Iron Loft only as a means to increase strength, never for its own sake. Success is defined as lifting more weight today, this week, or this month than was lifted yesterday, last week, or last month. Period.

We encourage the consumption of nutritious, single-ingredient foods in adequate quantities to support strength gains in ourselves, while simultaneously working to break down the modern-day aesthetic of emaciation and undernourishment. We actively promote the idea that strength training makes women healthy and beautiful. We strive to become MORE, not Less, and we encourage others to do the same.

Everybody who lifts at Black Iron Loft shares the responsibility of spotting, coaching, and encouraging all of the other lifters, beginning the day they learn the lifts. Everybody keeps everybody safe. Everybody coaches everybody. Everybody pushes everybody to succeed.

    5/22/14:

    Volume squats: 315 x 5 x 5
    5/3/1 Bench: 160 x 5, 180 x 5, 190 x 9 (missed the 10th due to form stupidity)
Bench extra sets: 190 x 8,8,4 (took real short rest between the last and penultimate sets)

Chin-ups: AMRAP in 7 minutes: 66 (Thought I'd break 100. This was humbling)

    5/24/14:

Power Cleans: Horrible today. I'm smoked. No explosiveness. Not even gonna list all the fails.
    Squat: 275 x 3 x 3
    Press: 135 x 5
    Dips: +75 11,10,8

Now I gotta take this fist-pump party down the shore. Jersey represent.

5/26/14: Memorial Day. Invited one of the guys who trains at the academy and happens to be my neighbor over for a little grilling this afternoon. He invited me to lift in his garage, where he has a Rogue rack, bar, hi-temp bumpers, etc... so I took him up on it.

    Intensity Squat: 355 x 5 (5-rep PR)
    Volume Press: 125 x 5 x 5
    3/3/3+ Deadlifts: 315 x 3, 365 x 3, 405 x 6

The middle set of deadlifts was supposed to be 360, but there were no 2.5's to be found and I didn't feel like running home for a pair of mine, so I whatev'ed it. It's a holiday.

Glad to see a fellow Jersey Lifter on these boards.

I got a question for you: Is the rationale behind your deadlift programming available on your old log? I've been playing a lot with my own deadlift programming within TM because mine is like 5 lbs above my squat, but haven't had great success; just wanted to get another view point.

Thanks for stopping in. The logs get so boring when nobody says anything. Jersey in the house.

I've done both 5/3/1 on deadlifts and programmed them similarly to Texas Method, where I was trying to pull heavy 5's, then triples, then singles. Close to the meet I was working up to a heavy single and sometimes adding some backoff reps. I've always deadlifted significantly more than I could squat, so I would guess we have pretty different anthropometry.

The plan now is to do 5/3/1 until the final sets start to become hard to complete, then just do the top set on 5's week, 2x the top set on 3's week, and 5x the top set on 5/3/1 week. (Skip the first two "work" sets and the AMRAP reps.)

    5/31/14:

Was on a camping trip. Did some farmers walks, lunges, RDL's, shrugs, handstand pushups, and rows with some 6-gallon water jugs. It was stupid, but I felt like I had to do something. Also I paddled a raft for most of 4 hours.

6/2/14: Back in Black Iron Loft.

    Intensity squats: 360 x 5 (New PR)
    Volume Press: 130 x 5 x 5
    5/3/1 Deadlift: 340 x 5, 385 x 3, 430 x 5 (not a PR)

I'm all bloatey and fat from the camping trip, where I ate and drank my face off. Over 155 this a.m., but I know most of it won't last.

Strong lifting Adam. Hell of a job on the deadlift. My deadlift is only a few pounds up on my squat, so I'm always amazed to see such a big gap.
