Got2Squat Trying to Pick up Heavy Stuff
This entry is a duplicate of the last entry in my former log from the intermediate section. I am still an early intermediate lifter. I did my first meet in April just for funsies and totalled 1067: Bench 247, Squat 380, Deadlift 440 in the M1 category @ 192 lbs. Did SS then TM for my first year. Today marks the end of my first year of training. Moving forward with an HLM template.
Age 43, 5'8" 193 lb

Heavy Day
Went into the workout with the idea that if the warmups felt very good and light, that I would ramp up to attempt 1 rep maxes on all the lifts. Here is how it went.
Squat:
45x10x2, 135x5, 225x3
315x1
335x1
365x1
395x1 +15 PR @ 10
315x5
Bench:
45x15x2, 135x5, 185x1
225x1
255x1 +8 PR
265x1 +18 PR
205x5x2
Deadlift:
135x5, 225x3, 315x1
405x1
455x1 +15 PR
465x1 +25 PR
This changes my 3 lift total from 1067 in April to 1125 for a 58 lb increase. This is also my official 1 year total. I am very happy with this, I could not have asked for a better session. I believe my year end goal of a 1200 lb total is now realistically within reach. Based on this, here are my minimum and stretch goals for year end:
Bench 300/315
Squat 425/450
Deadlift 500/525

HLM, Heavy Day
This was my first time ever using ascending sets rather that sets across, so not sure if all the weights were ideal for this type of programming. However, I feel like the top sets were about where they need to be, with a little bit of room to move up for a few weeks without a big problem. Did some more reading up on programming and deloads, and this seems like a good option to try. Should help keep workouts shorter as well compared to doing all sets across like I have done for my entire first year.
Squat:
135x5
185x5
225x5
275x5
315x5
335x5
Bench:
135x5
155x5
175x5
195x5
215x5
225x5
Deadlift:
135x5
225x3
315x1
365x1
410x5 +5 lb PR Not an easy set but it went, despite feeling not quite 100% recovered from Friday's SGDL's.
Kroc Rows: Decided to use straps on these to save my grip and make sure my hands get 100% recovered. Deadlifts felt fine and hands feeling pretty good today.
125's x 10 wow straps make these much easier. Now its a rowing exercise instead of a challenging grip exercise
130's x 8 Start here or higher next time.
135's x 8

HLM programming
Heavy Day
This got pushed from Monday as I was travelling for work. Still getting used to getting my work weights sorted out, as I am doing ascending sets for the first time ever since I started lifting. I think I am getting things dialed in. Today went well.
Squat: 45x10x2, 135x5
245x5
275x5
305x5
335x5
355x4: fifth might have gone but it would have been a slow, all out grinder. I wanted to leave a little in the tank for deadlifts. I am very happy with this top set, since my previous 5RM is 350, and that was fresh doing only warmups before the top set in Texas Method intensity day.
Bench: 45x15x2, 135x5
175x5
195x5
215x5
225x5
335x4 failed fifth rep. As with the squat, this was right around my previous 5RM on TM intensity day, meaning I was fresh having only done warmups and then one top set. So I feel like 4 reps after 4 working sets is pretty good.
Deadlift: 135x5, 225x3, 315x1, 365x1
415x5 +5 PR tough set
Kroc Rows: straps
130'sx8
135'sx8
140'sx8 wow this pounds my back. I like it.

Saturday 7/25/2015
HLM: Medium day
195 lbs
Squat: 45x10x2, 135x5
225x5
255x5
285x5
315x5
325x3 Squat feeling heavy today so called it here.
Bench:45x15x2, 135x5
185x5
195x5
205x5
235x4 failed 5th rep...half way up. No biggie, was not feeling especially strong today
185x10
SGDL: 135x5
275x5
315x5
345x4 +10 Killing my grip, even with straps . I've enjoyed doing these but might just try 3x5 light deadlifts next week for my light pull. Not sure.
BB Curls:
80x8 So I did these and thought: will these make my bench stronger? will these make my deadlift stronger? will these make my squat stronger? will these really make me stronger? the answer was really no, and I'm not a bodybuilder, so:
Kroc Rows: straps
130's x 8
140's x 8
140's x 8 Add five next week
