Trading for improved air management (SCBA)
I’m a volunteer fire fighter and suck down a lot of air when using a SCBA. How much of air management is technique/practice and how much is cardio fitness? On the cardio side, is there anything special to do like LISS v. HIIT?

You need to be in good cardio shape. After that, it is anxiety/mind management, which comes with experience.
When I taught SCUBA there were certain locations that would always defy planning protocols, due to non-pros inadvertently sucking down too much air due to anxiety/excitement.
