Default Need Advice: Too Fat to Squat

I have an embarrassing and stupid problem.

After lifting and getting somewhat strong (365 squat, 405 DL, 225 bench) I went off to grad school and tried to balance school/work/marriage and stopped lifting. Fast forward to today and my strength is pitiful and I’m really fat.

How fat? 6’1” 315 lbs. Want to do SS again because it was a great base last time. But when I bend over, my fat gut messes up my form. I struggle to bend at the waist. I’ve tried multiple times. Feel my form breaking. And deadlifting is similar.

Question is, what do I do? I need to work out to change my body composition. And I would love to start with SS. Currently doing SS bench and press with leg press in place of squat and DL. Feels stupid to do so, but at least I’m lifting. Should I keep doing this until my stomach shrinks enough to keep good form, or should I do something different?

Any advice is helpful, especially if you’ve dealt with this too.

Thank you! Very, very helpful. I will start this today. I look forward to someday moving to the SS program!
