For me I said fuck it after a few years and went straps and never looked back. After enough occasional skin injuries jeopardizing progress I think the pros outweighed the cons in overall progress, also prefer the symmetry and simplicity that strapped DOH provides.
I'm not about to enter any powerlifting competitions so what do I care if my grip strength is less than optimal, wouldn't recommend that to a newbie that's just me.

A quick update: Since posting this, I took a reset for unrelated reasons, and worked my way back up to a 375lb deadlift. I stopped using straps at 370, and my hook grip held up just fine. I suppose the relatively small increase and doing strapless deadlift warm ups and chin-ups were enough to keep my grip strength.
