Default Texas Method to a Powerlifting Meet

    Hello,

I’m currently doing the 3 day per week Texas Method. I'm 5’10”, 42yrs, and weigh 207 pounds.

My 5 rep max for squat is 347.5, bench is 238, and deadlift is 402.5. (all for 5 reps). I know I’m far from my potential, but I’m working my way up at about 2.5 pounds a week. (My body seems to handle this best)

I think it would be both fun and challenging to do a powerlifting meet. I’d love any resources/links to learn more about this.

    How does a meet work?
How should I change my Texas Method programming to get ready for the meet?
Should I drop weight to get into the 198 class?
Am I even strong enough yet to consider doing a meet? (Should I wait?)

Thank you so much for the help and advice!!!

    Ben

    hey ben

ive also been doing TM for about 4 months and im using it for meet prep. i have a meet coming up in feb this year. i am also 41, 5'10 and about 230.

meets are great, you should not worry about weight class or bodyweight since they use a method that gives your points based on the amount you lift relative to your body weight anyways. plus, being your first meet, and with your numbers, you are unlikely to be setting any records in any weight class. so your weight class doesnt matter. there is no strength baseline required to do a meet, and nobody could care less how much or how little you lift. everyone is only concerned about themselves anyway.

the only difference i would make in your programming is to start doing singles on your intensity days about 4-6 weeks prior to your meet so that you have a better idea of where you want to open and also just gives you practice with higher loads.

i will include a link here of my last meet prep where i used TM for powerlifting, which i believe is page 138 in the gray book. my prep was 12-9-2022 to 2-11-2023. good luck!

Good one, Martin. Changing age might work, too - I'm sure that's on its way.
