I went to a hardware store and bought some of the largest washers they had (these were for standard one inch bars). I took them home and weighed each one on a digital scale and mixed and matched them until I had two sets of three that weighed 10 oz (.625 lb) each, since they had slight variations in weight, then taped the sets of three together on the edge with duck tape.

I bought adjustable ankle weights with 1/4 lb bars. you can load them to be 1/4lb all the way up to 2.5lbs.

That's a great idea. Where did you buy them?

    A pair costs $6 and weighs 1 1/4 lbs. Buy 6 and you can go up 1 1/4, 2 1/2 and 3 3/4 lbs.
This is late in coming but thanks for the suggestion and link gman. There are Fastenal distributors all over. I found one close to where I work and picked up 6 washers. Thanks to you, I knew exactly what to order.
