When I'm doing heavy squats I can't help but grunt at the last bit -it's not conscious, it just happens, but .. it's my gym and I make the rules. Some of my guys get really vocal when they set PR's (which, on SS is every damn training session!), others are quiet. Those that shout, good on 'em. We're a small gym, everyone knows everyone and if that's what they do to motivate themselves, I'm all for it.
We have a rule - the lifter going heavy gets to pick the music during their lifting time.
I love when the small gym I've started going to is empty. I turn up my music and give a roar at the top of my lungs before I get under the bar.
I would never do that at 24 hour fatness.
Gary, you should expel a controlled amount of air under pressure. Holding the breath (especially squatting) can cause aneurisms, stroke or worse. I found that my "face exploding" was caused by forgetting to exhale on a max.
I make 2 noises I guess. One is a slight hiss in the working sets as I exhale. The reason for this is so that I can audibly monitor my exhalation control in the last half of the rep.
The other is only on really big lifts, or towards the end of a set, where I somehow got into the habit of a "eEEIYooot!" sort of thing I do. But that primal yelling is either for posers or guys in PL gyms psyching up. At least it's in place there - but not your average gym.
We have one guy (pretty muscular, lives in tan booth) who never squats, deads, or benches, but screams from his machines with half stacks on as if he'd been kicked in the nads. No one is impressed.
I actually do better with some grunting during my squats and deadlifts.
The worksets are heavy for me right now though. Dunno why, but they help.
I don't grunt, but I do spit on the mirrors alot when I exhale.
