Like Hamburger said, I have seen a fat bar used for squats during WSM. The bar also had a fixed weight on it, where it didn't spin. A lot of guys had problems with the thing rolling down their back. So if you are thinking about strongman, maybe it is worth it to practice every so often with it?
As for the 32mm bar, I squat on an 8' bar like that and love it. Some powerlifting feds do use the 8' bars, but I really didn't feel like I needed to practice with it beforehand.
