Sometimes we take for granted people’s ability to breath and brace while training. It seems so natural and simple, yet trainees still find ways to mess it up by: 1) not getting a big enough breath initially or 2) not bracing as hard as they can before each rep.

I think this cannot be stressed enough. I had "back problems" and spent the better part of two years trying to sort out my back pain and sciatica. I sat on lacrosse balls, did yoga, etc.

Read an article about how to use a belt. Started breathing in DEEP before each rep and pressing into my belt.

    Back pain magically disappeared.

Words to lift by. At some point when my deadlifts got heavy I began to develop petechiae on my upper chest, shoulders and face. Rip noted something on a forum post about the fact that it's crucial to keep the mouth open after doing the Valsava. Problem solved. (Largely; I still get some petechiae on heavy deads, presses and squats, even though, via checking footage of the set, my mouth is open the entire set.)
