Default Why are people so scared of deadlifts?

    Hi all,

Just an observation over the past year, as my deadlift has crawled past the 5 plate mark I've noticed gym people, including some pretty big gym bros, do a double take when they see me setting up. One time one even didn't believe me when I told him I was still warming up after a 405 double. Some of them are benching in the 315-405 range and even squatting (albeit with fascinating form) 405+ so the idea of someone deadlifting in the 500s shouldn't be that strange.

I'm sure the strange phenomena will only intensify when the resolutioners turn up

Most people are pussies, BT. That's just the way it is. Most of them wore the mask, remember?

I suspect that a good part of it has to do with the fact that you can't do a "half deadlift" or a "quarter deadlift", the way you can a squat.

Even with the Deadlift of Shame (you know, with the arms inside the legs), you still have a fixed and difficult range of motion from pulling off the deck to all the way upright. Maybe the analogous movement to the shortened squat would be RDLs, and oh, look! That one sure is a lot more popular with certain gym bros and bunnies. It also just happens to be a variant that you can short the rep....

The true DL is difficult, you can't really cheat it for an ego lift, and the fact it has no stretch reflex just tops it off as an ego killer.

That's being generous. (Must be the Christmas spirit.)

They would believe it if you were 180lbs with razor abs; this is what the media tells them is required for a 500lb deadlift.

I'm 190 and v-shaped in the torso. If anything, the bros are fat cos they eat for gains while only training half the body
