Best session in a long time today. It began with me and two other brown belts along with a lower ranking black belt being taught by Victor, the one guy in our dojo my size. He worked us all over in the brown belt techniques with the admonition to make it real. As in punches actually aimed at the face and counters that if they weren't effective to not tap out or go with them. Well, that's going to make life difficult for them I mused. I am not easy to move or take down and I go with the counter most of the time so as not to discourage who I'm working with. But not today. Which frustrated the others at first until they started dialing in their technique to better effectiveness.
After that we got to do phase drills. I haven't had a chance to do these in a long time and Victor gave the attacker and defender carte blanche. In phase drills one person faces a line of attackers. The attackers come at him one at a time in a series. In the lower ranks the attackers are limited to grabs and the defenders to escapes. Today strikes and other attacks were allowed and the defender could counter with takedowns, chokes, and strikes. Lots of fun, but again, the others had problems with takedowns on me. A lot of what we do involves misaligning the head and the lower back. Without good technique using circles and well timed strikes to the lower back, moving me is like trying to move a telephone pole. But with some advice from Victor and myself, they eventually managed. I used a number of chokes in my counters as the defender that had them tapping early and often.
