Deadlift: 245-5, 280-5, 315-6. Nice to exceed the number of reps on that last set.
Shrugs: 385-5, 425-5, 455-5.
DB Hammer Curls: 70 lbs. 8-8-6. My grip ran out of mojo after the shrugs. For which I did not have to use straps, thank you very much.

Up at the crack of dawn for a GXP. A much needed wakeup call for returning to reality after Labor Day.

Kid class in jujitsu was lightly attended. Probably the shock of back to school week. Nothing of note to discuss except for noticing one of the organge belt boys. This kid was executing technique better than the blue belts we've promoted. He's an Asian kid with some classic round horn rim glasses from the 40's and has always been a quiet and diligent performer. It seems like something clicked all of a sudden for him and he was positively on fire last night. Oh, and another sudden realization of how even the most basic of white belt techniques results in a misalignment of the attacker's body. It's a rear cross handed wrist grab attack where the defender steps back on the same side foot as the hand that was grabbed, pivots, and the hand is wedged out of the grip by a 45 degree thrust. Then the grabbing hand is checked and the freed up hand returns in a knife hand to the side of the neck. The black belt directing the session pointed out that at the step and pivot, the attacker's shoulder drops. A sure sign they are off balance from being misaligned. The off balancing makes it hard to step and recover, and sets them up for the countering strike.
The adult class had me another brown belt and a green belt working on all the techniques from white belt on up. Our task was to refresh ourselves on the lower ranks techniques and polish the green belt's execution of the techniques. So we ground away at each other.

5-5-5 Cycle.
Bench Press: 150-5, 175-5, 200-6. That last rep wasn't such a grind. I briefly toyed with trying for a 7th but recognized that was likely to fail. So I ended on a positive note.
Barbell Rows: 125-5, 145-5, 165-10.

There's some strong work here, Mark. It looks like your mojo is on the right track (regardless of the grip issue after those shrugs---445x5!).

Yeah, it's good to see things coming back Oldman.
This morning, despite a bad night's sleep and creaky knees I got my GXP done. No idea why my knees feel like the Tin Man's. Maybe I need Dorothy to hand me the oil can.
My poor sleep was probably a product of getting a rude shock yesterday. I had a couple of friends from college and afterward that I lost track of and touch with back in the 70's after I got out of the public sector of law enforcement. Ed got married and moved to St. Louis and Steve stayed at SIU in Housing Services rising through the ranks. I'd tried a few times over the years to locate them, but earlier this week Dearly Beloved, my ace computer security whiz, announced in some triumph she had found them. So I tried calling Steve and discovered that number was out of service. Ed had an email address and I sent him a note. Steve died a few years ago, and even Ed doesn't know any real details.
Man. He and Ed were mainstays of my younger days but all the moving around Dearly Beloved and I did in our salad years just got us disconnected. Now I'll have to wait to maybe see Steve on the other side.
RIP. He was a good man and knowing he's gone just leaves a hollow feeling in my chest.

5-5-5 Cycle.
Squat: 190-5, 220-5, 250-6. My knees finally relented today enough to squat. My depth is still suspect. I have GOT to find someone knowledgeable enough to check my depth. These didn't feel at all difficult, but I forced myself down to the bottom and even paused there a few times to get and stay low.
Good Mornings: 110 for 3 sets of 8.
DB Hammer Curls: 70 for 3 sets of 8.
Between the creaks and my funk over Steve, I spent most of the weekend making myself and others around me miserable. Mortality is a bitch. But I owe it to those who love me and care about me to not be a dark cloud loitering around them and becoming a grumbling old pain in the ass.

Up and at em early for a GXP. The humidity is 90% here even on the coast, so I can't quit sweating.

I decided to shake things up today and try out overhead presses to determine how feasible it might be to get into one of the upcoming SS meets.
OHP: 45-10, 95-5, 135-1, 155-1, 165-nope. Almost, but not quite a lockout. Not as bad as I thought it might be, 155 wasn't that hard, I thought I might have 165 and maybe even 170 in me. But not as good as a hoped. Not this year.
Rolling Dumbbells: 50 for 3 sets of 8. I added 5 more pounds to them and struggled with the last couple of reps in the 3rd set. My triceps felt pumped all afternoon.
