I got paired up with a purple belt to teach today. He's half my age but he's just as inflexible as I am in the fingers, wrists, elbows, and shoulders. He needed some work with getting a good kuzushi (off balancing) with his hands. He would push when he needed to pull and his transitions from blocking a strike to moving into a throwing kuzushi was hard for him. So we worked on how to move from push blocking to pull kuzushi. I hope it takes. A number of the techniques called for shoulder and body checks. It took some work with the heavy bags to get him wise as to how to cock back, bend the knees and hips to create a gap, and then drive hard into the attacker. With no disrespect to him, it took some deprogramming to get him to bang into me hard. Not unlike deprogramming girls and women to hammer an attacker. He finally knocked me back a step which was no mean feat since I have 60 pounds on him.

Another matter to get him to improve was making me drop my shoulder with a falling palm heel strike. I know it's not easy to do on me, but the point was to get his technique to work for a larger attacker. After some work, I got him to relax his hand, wrist, and arm to perform a dead hand dropping strike to get my shoulder to drop.

    Weight: 260.

    More test singles.

Seated OHP: 45-8, 70-5, 95-3, 110-1, 125-1, 140-1, 155-1, 175-1. The 155 went up hard for some reason but I tried 175 anyway. It stalled halfway up but I fought it out and locked out the single.

    Stretched.

Tough couple of days leading off the week. DB got terrible pain in her left sciatica. So bad I took her to the ER for the doc to look at. No clear idea of what caused it all but it was bad. Not much or very good sleep since then for either of us. Yesterday's lifting got co-opted by getting the pain meds filled along with being the general dogsbody to fetch and carry for anything requiring getting up or bending over.

    Weight: 259.5

    More test singles.

Squat: 45-10, 45-8, 95-5, 185-2, 225-1, 255-1, 280-1, 280-1, 315-1. I asked the gym owner to spot my depth. He did periodically. 185 took 2 reps because the first one was so fast he couldn't tell. The 2nd one was good though he said. He checked in again at 280 and the first single was shallow but close. He got called away to other things and I repeated 280 to try to get deeper. I think I made it. 315 was a slow grind upward and I'm not sure if deep enough. I'll need to reconsider my attempts. I'll do this after my Friday workout with the bench press.

    Cardio (GXP) stretched.

DB is on the mend and less fragile now, which takes a huge load off my mind. I got the meet's flight info and will be lifting on Sunday with a Saturday weigh-in being strongly urged. Bigger turnout than I expected. I got a bad case of the willies.

Good luck - fuck the willies ( says someone who has never competed).

    Thanks guys.

I can't account for why I'm so nervous over this one. I know I can qualify for the drug tested nationals in this federation. I just don't want to disgrace myself.

    Test singles.

Bench Press: 45-10, 95-8, 135-3, 170-1, 195-1, 220-1, 240-1, 250-1. It went up slowly but I had no sense of a threat of a stall. So, yay! I think I got 253 in me for next Sunday. A wonderful confidence and morale builder. That said, my adjusted plan for attempts:

    SQ: 115(kg) 253 (lbs.), 125-275, 142.5-314.

    BP: 100-220, 110-242, 115-253.

    DL: 170-374, 182.5-402, 187.5-413.

    Total: 445-980.

We'll see about the DL. That will be a stretch for me.

Lifting ran 23 minutes with a peak HR of 122 @ 79% of MHR. Cardio (GXP) and stretched. Total time was 35 minutes.

The plan for next week is one session of jujitsu tomorrow and one light short one on Monday. No lifting or cardio. DB is working out the hotel logistics. I know I'll get a little grief over missing some mat time and while it's a slight risk of displeasing my betters in the dojo at a not so great time just now, they seem to have moderated their position since they use my lifting as a marketing tool in their demonstrations.

A lot going on in my head that I am still trying to resolve. I don't miss working at all, but have this nagging sense of incompletion hanging over me. I think it's because everything else here in CA is done, and the groundwork has been laid and finalized with the new house being bought. I feel some guilt for letting my near term objective of shodan anchor us here and it eats at me. DB and OD tell me not to feel that way because they're fine. Can't help it.

Good luck Hurling on all your attempts, and thanks for calculating the kilos.
