Thanks Eric. I appreciate it. Being retired at my advanced age makes it easier.

I trained Jereth and Val tonight. The main task getting their form as flawless as can be achieved so as to prevent and/or minimize the chances of injury. Both have a lot of potential, especially in the deadlift where they both worked up into over 200 lbs. with plenty more they can achieve.

Some conditioning today. I lead off with the new speed bag, a small one the boxers call a peanut. It calls for really speedy hands reciprocating in a timely manner. Fortunately, me and mine were equal to the task. Then rounds of medicine ball toss 2 sets of 5, the rower, flogging the heavy bag which mightily unsettled the AFROTC folk in blue t-shirts and shorts doing PT's, and concluding with rolling and resistance band work for external rotation.

Squat: 250 for 4 singles. The plan was a back off set with 195 for 5-12 reps, but my back was acting up a little so I declared a limited victory. This was the first time squatting since the meet and I felt creaky.

Cable Hammer Curls: Sets of 12, 120-130-140.

Reverse Hyperextension: Sets of 12, 25-30-35. Despite a dodgy back, these felt OK. It really is the best lower back exercise IMO, no discomfort from it at all. Here's hoping it armor plates the erectors etc.

My right middle finger has really been uncomfortable since the meet and I did a few test reps in the deadlift to see if was affecting my grip. Nope. Not a twinge from them with a hook grip. So, YAY! Couple that with a just received appointment call from a hand specialist, and here's hoping that will pan out.

Rolling and external rotator work with resistance band.

I sent out an email yesterday to the powers that be in the Rec Center to see if they will have an intramural powerlifting meet this year. I did one after first arriving back here, so maybe another is in the offing.

Gabriel, Angela, and Mason showed tonight. All of them retained more than I thought they would from last week's teaching of falling. Mason was challenging with his constant chatter, inattention, and complaining. Late in the session he complained for the third time about "are we almost done yet?" I said "It's 6:13 and the lesson ends at 6:30. But it can be over for you right now if you want to go over and sit down next to your Mom and your brother." His Mom gave him a look that made him shrivel.

We got through all the falls and then into the blocking and striking drills. I spent a lot of time getting them into a good Horse Stance and teaching the forms. Lotta work with them on these fundamentals is in the future.

Finally there was just time for the first two escapes from outside wrist grabs. Angela was frankly a little scared by the prospect of getting grabbed. So I got one on one with her and quietly explained how if she wanted to learn how to protect herself she would need to be grabbed at least lightly at first. Then practice how to get out of the grab. She calmed a little.

Conditioning speed work interspersed with other stuff. Speed bag, medicine ball toss, box jumps, heavy bag, kettle bell swings, prowler, finished with rolling and external rotator work.

I discovered that Saluki Con will have Adrian Quinn teaching sword work. Looking into attending JUST that without their ridiculous $200+ tickets. I've done baton and yawara and tanto work along with staff and cane things. I never had a chance to work with the sword. The main sword guy, Tom Reichenbach passed away some years back, and his most accomplished student, Gary, and my mentor, never had a chance to work with me on the weapon. You don't get to touch a sword until you are a black belt, and we moved back here three months after my promotion. In fact, I delayed our move (with DB's concurrence of course) for 6 months until I made rank. As much as I wanted out of the nuthouse by the Pacific, I wanted Shodan more.

Latest news, the orthopedist diagnosed my finger problem as trigger finger. Ironic, since I use my index rather than my middle finger for shooting.

Also, I am now listed in the US Powerlifting Association coaches register. The only one in the entire state. The nearest ones are in Des Moines, IA and Louisville, KY.

Bench Press: 210 for 4 singles followed by a backoff set with 165 for 8 reps.

Hammer Row: 320 for 3 sets of 5 followed by a backoff set of 250 for 8 reps.

Bench Dips: Sets of 12 reps 0-10-10.

I neglected to mention that I got a steroid shot for my trigger finger. Results vary from 30-70% of success with this approach. Sometimes for good, more often merely a temporary fix. Plan B is a 10-15 minute outpatient surgery with local anesthesia with a 97% chance of success. Right now, things feel pretty good, I can barely tell there's an issue. I have a follow up appointment in 4 weeks to see further results or resort to Plan B.

Hope the shot works. I've had some hand finger wrist issues over the years due to working as a mechanic. To me seemed to heal them so far.

Thanks Jerry. It's early days yet, but so far, so good.
