It's Latin, and I picked it up from reading Roman history. Wherein the auspex (a diviner or priest of sorts) would determine coming events from watching bird behaviors.

DB and I took a moderate hike today to a national archaeological site called Millstone Bluff. It's about a mile out and back with a 193 foot climb with some catwalks around a few places on the trail. The wind was wisping through the bare tree branches and other than that it the quiet was peaceful.

Not terribly taxing, but scenic and informative.

Coaching Lena tonight, Jereth, the other Olympian is getting his shoulder looked at by a doc, and about time too. Let the expert help us sort it out.

Lena, like Jereth, listens well to cues, and with her it's even easier since she is doing deadlifts only in competition. She was concentrated and diligent in her performance of the lift tonight and was in and out in short order. No correction of her form was needed.

This morning was all about speed and ballistics and plyometrics, with speed bag, 3 sets of 3 of box jumps and 25 lb. medicine ball toss, heavy bag work experimenting with an outblock and two open dead hand counters to the head from an attacker's roundhouse punch, finished off with rolling and hamstring stretches.

Bench Press: 215 for 5 singles.

Incline Close Grip Bench Press: 140 for 3 sets of 5.

Hammer Row: 365 for 3 sets of 3.

Jereth messaged me with some sad news for him. His doctor said his shoulder problems need to get better without powerlifting or the shot put. My condolences to him.

A light and easy session of conditioning today with speed bag, crunches, heavy bag, and handball. Then assisting DB in her own strength training as she begins to cycle up into it.

More messaging with Jereth the Special Olympian. His doc relented just a bit and said he could practice shot put. With his left (non-dominant) hand and shoulder. Small victories.

Arms only stuff today. My lumbars and right hamstring are very unhappy with the deadlifts and box squats yesterday. So SciFit, speed bag, rower, medicine ball toss.

So why do I mention these aches and pains. Because hurting is a common companion after training. Especially as you get old. But it beats the alternative of letting rust accumulate and gravity have it's way with you as you get weaker from inactivity. Wire brushing the rust off is uncomfortable, but necessary to continue to live as full a life as possible.

In other news, there has been a realignment of teams and athletes in this region of Special Olympics and DB and I will be supporting most of the same athletes now on Team Ohana. Not a name I would have expected to see in Southern Illinois. SoCal? Oh yeah. The place was replete with the Ohana sea turtles etc. in the rear windows of vehicles.

Jammed through a lifting session this morning with very short rest intervals, a minute or less. Which didn't affect my heavier seated press capacity at all. Surprising me.

Seated Press: 165 for 5 singles.

Cybex Lateral Raise: Sets of 12, 90-95-100.

Cable Pulldown: 90 for 3 sets of 8.

Calf Press: Sets of 12, 450-470-490.

This is normally a 45-50 minute session. Out in 33 minutes.
