Thanks Oldster, I'll try some higher rep warmups to see how that goes. As for my back, I misspoke about the problem in question. It was L-1 that was awry, not T-1 as the chiro worked on me again yesterday. She fixed me up good this time and it's holding what with the ice packs I used all last night at home to bring down the inflammation. She also found several neck vertebrae and an occiput plate not quite right. This was no doubt from jujitsu saturday and the other guy I was working with a brown belt who I outweigh by 70 lbs. and who was having control problems. He rattled my teeth a few times with knife hand strikes to my neck that he should have pulled. It's ironic too, in that he was telling me to slow down even though I was moving at 1/2 to 2/3 speed and it felt very slow to me. I also didn't connect with him because of the speed I was moving at. If this happens again, I'll flatten him hard so as to convey the hint better next time. She got that horrified but fascinated look on her face when I described to her how this probably happened. Like I said, something like porn for her.

I had to hustle in the gym this morning because I had a 40 mile drive to teach a physical security course in Seal Beach to some security generalists and morning rush hour in SoCal is no joke. So I did a cardio evaluation test on the elliptical I use. I tested at 35 for the VO2 max which was a tick down from Excellent which I usually score to Good. My resting heart rate was high, so this may be some residual stress reaction from last month's festitivities at work and the upcoming wobblies about teaching the course this morning.

    Weight: 250

5 minute warmup on the bike. (Light Day)

    Overhead Press: 135 x 8 x 3 + 12

    Hammer High Row: 270 x 8 x 3 + 12

    Claw Grip: 177 x 2 x 5.

    Foam roller and stretching.

July screwed me over entirely. It was an extraordinarily stressful month at work with first an internal review in the first week to prepare for a government review in the last week, and neither one went well especially for me. Then there was the malfunctioning scale and I discovered I had been living in a fool's paradise for several years and now need to lose at least 30 lbs. My body started to rebel big time too. First my back, which in retrospect was almost certainly a stress reaction based on past history, and then my ankles. My right one this week reminded me that I will be paying for my mis-spent youth on the installment plan for the rest of my life. Breaking the right one twice causes it to get very bad a few times a year, only once if I'm lucky, and this hasn't been one of those years. It has been tweaky all week and got so bad Tuesday night it kept me sleepless in Redondo. It also swelled up to half again it's normal size as Dearly Beloved pointed out to me last night. I hobbled around on a cane all yesterday and so couldn't get the mojo together for lifting let alone getting thumped in jujitsu. It's good enough now to manage without a cane, and I'll take 80% at this point. August will be better, and I'll quit pissing and moaning.

Please tell me you wrap that ankle when it swells, my friend.

I do wrap it or put on one of my numerous braces for my various ailing parts when I notice that it is swollen. I didn't think to look at it yesterday, but when I got home Dearly Beloved spotted it and was upset that I hadn't done that too. So I just need to remember to look at it when it hurts. I just forgot this time.

Along with that, I got a nasty shock yesterday at the doctor's office on the scale when I went in for a routine blood test for my cholesterol and blood pressure meds. It read 250 lbs! I told the doc I though his scale must be off. "Well lets see," he said and stepped on himself. "I weigh 220 on my scale at home. This one shows me at 218." So this morning I stepped on the scale at Golds. 250 lbs. Well son of a bitch! My scale at home has been getting further out of whack over the course of nearly a year or more maybe even before I started this log. Assuming the scale was right then, and I'm not at all sure that it was, I have actually gained weight. So, now to work for real with a new scale to measure progress with. Damn!

I did a GXP with foam rolling and stretched.
I was a bit confused at the recent posts, scrolled back and found this. Time to throw that scale out the window. New fangled tech + geezer = problems, almost invariably. My 66y/o mom is the one exception.

What's your diet like, out of curiosity?

I bought a new scale within days of discovering Tanita's betrayal. The faithless whore! I'm not being misogynistic here, spar or Gwynn if you happen to read this, but the name Tanita just seems feminine to me. Oh, what the Hell. Tanita, you rat bastard, I'll have your balls off with a dull tanto for this! OK, now I've covered my bases just like Dirty Harry. I've potentially managed to hate on everyone irregardless of race, creed, gender, or color. That scale by the way, wasn't all that new fangled. In fact as fangling in our digital age goes, it was ancient. As in over 10 years old. I don't know if the force plate spring got weaker over time or something happened to the electronics. But happen it did, and out it went.

My diet was and is pretty clean. I did start to allow myself the occasional treat of ice cream to go with Dearly Beloved's cookies or brownies that she loves baking. But that was when I was living in LA-LA land thinking I was down around 210. No ice cream for this bonzo for the next year or so. Other than that, I was heavy on the meat, 'cause if God didn't intend for us to eat animals, He wouldn't have made them out of meat. Cheese is a big friend of mine. Lots of non-starchy and high fiber vegetables. Trust me, there are very good reasons for the fiber thing as your digestive system slows down. I don't like fruit much and never have, but avocados are a gift from heaven what with their fiber and marvelous taste. I eat relatively few potatoes and as far as bread, just whatever high fiber english muffins are on sale this week for breakfast.

I have to lose this too, because my blood pressure problems I have no doubt have gotten worse in the last couple of years because of it.

Weight: 249.5 Typical reaction to lots of anti-inflammatories again. Water retention weight gain with a return to normal once I stop using them. The ankle status is 90+% and thank God for that. I just wish I could figure out what brings it on out of nowhere so fast and why it goes away as quickly as it usually does.

Since this week has been disrupted by one thing and another on the lifting front, I did a GXP followed by foam rolling and stretching.

    Mr. H,
Hearing of your ankle trouble reminds me of my conclusion that older lifters should expect injuries as almost inevitable on the way to strength. So when BB friends of mine told me not to squat to depth and other SS practices, they were wrong overall, but right on the narrow, unimportant issue of the possibility of injuries. yes?

Actually, thus far all Mark's issues seem to be related to old injuries, right MEH? Things that were acquired in a life of rough physical activity.
And really, he's in pretty great shape for just about any age.

My experience is that injuries take longer to recover from rather than you'll get dinged more frequently just because you are, um, more seasoned. Take squat depth as an example, I am way, way more flexible in legs and hips after squatting below parallel for a while. This flexibility goes a long way towards general health and avoiding the nagging bullshit concerns that too many of my friends whine about. Listen, those BB folks expect even 20 something lifters to blow out their knees if they go low, too. It's a bias they have. Maybe they think that they are looking out for you with that advice but it doesn't hold water. Keep an eye on your training recovery, eat right and get strong. You'll feel great and you have no greater chance of injury than any other stong dude.
