Catching up on some log posts.

    1-23-17
    Back was bothering me
    Bench 135x5, 165x5, 195x3x5
OHP 11x5, 140x5, 150x5, 150x3. Got a pain in lower back during the press. Feels link muscle but loading the spine is starting to hurt. So I stopped for the day.

    1-30-17
    Squat 135x5, 225x5, 265 x3 x5
    OHP 115x5, 135x5, 155x5, x3, x3, x2. I did not seem to have it today.

    2-7-17
    Squat 140x5, 230x5, 260 x2x5, 265x5
OHP 120x5, 140x5, 150x2, x3, x2 Pain in lower back especially in the left side in the area between the top of the back pocket and the waist. I took it easy.

2-14-17 My back has been sore recently, especially when I stand up from sitting. I am not sure if it is an impinged nerve but it seems more like a muscle pull. I was planning to do some benching to leave the lower back alone.
Bench 135x5, 175x5, 185x5 195x4, x3, x3. It has been a while so when I got to a point when the rep seemed to just make it I stopped, afraid I might frail on the next rep.
I also did squats 135x10. This helped my back. It seems the trouble is muscle so I will try a variation of the Bill Starr rehab.

I am planning to hit the gym each day for a short rehab work out. We will see what the results are. This weekend I am scheduled to babysit the grand kids. that is a workout in itself, but lots of fun.

2-22-17 time flies. I got a sharp pain in my left upper glute/lower back every time I stood up from sitting an hour or more. I learned to sit on the front half of the chair seat so I avoided bending my lower back or slouching. The first three or four steps after getting out of a car was also a pain. I finally decided the pain was muscle and not something else, so I started a Starr rehab.

    2-21-17
Bench 140x5, 160x5, 180x2x5. After a set, I could not sit up without holding on to the bar.
Squat 135 x2x10 . The fist rep was memorable. I did get a short spasm in one rep of the second set. I notice my back was more vertical in the squat. The more I bent over to have my chest face the floor the more the pain increased.

    2-22-17
Did not feel like going to the gym today, but I went.

    Dead lift 140 x5x10
OHPress 115X3X5. I tried the press because the last time I could not complete the sets because of back pain. This time, no complaints although it was light weight. I did get a spasm in my quad during the second set. Go figure.

My back is much improved. Sitting is easier, and exiting the car is getting better. I am impressed with the Starr rehab method.

I know the deal where I could bench but needed help sitting up. I was never a big fan of wearing a belt much. But now I wear it on work sets for Sqts DL and press and it seems to help.

Coming back after a month not training. I had been reading Dr. Sullivan and Andy Baker’s “Barbell Prescription”. I think part of my problem is I am being too greedy. I need to take smaller increases. I have reset at a lower weight to start my climb. I find with all my work commitments scheduling is difficult. I plan to show up more consistently and see where the weight takes me.

    Bench 135x5. 155x5, 175x5x3
Dead lift 135x5, 225x5x3, Dead lifts were easy. No hint of back pain or soreness.

3/30/17 – worked out during a lunch break
Squat 135x5, 205x5, 225x5x3 nice and easy. Did not want to push too hard the first day back from the layoff. I am trying to avoid some DOMS.
OHP 115x5, 135x5x2, 145x5. OHP was good but I am glad I did not try 155. I don’t think I would have done the 5 rep set.

Jerry like you, I wear a belt for squats and OH presses. The belt is not comfortable for deadlifts and benching.

Most lifters have problems with greed. We all want to be stronger. We all want to be stronger now. The trick is to be keep it under control and stay hungry!

Bench 135x5, 155x5, 180x5x3. Weight felt good. Rested about 3 minutes between sets.
Dead Lift 135x5, 225x5 235x5x2. Rested about 4 minutes between work sets. Weight was comfortable and the form felt good. Thanks to the recommendations in the barbell prescription I am trying to take small jumps. I will see where it goes.
Total time at gym was about 45 minutes.
