Thanks Oldster. The dips seem to be helping me with the bench press. But then there are always some days like today.
Oct 10
Squat 140x5, 230x5, 280x5x3 – dropped weight because the back has been troublesome the past fews days. Squats were difficult but effective – the back felt good.
OHP 120x5, 140x5, 165 x3, 160x3, 155x5, 155x4 – not a good day

Friday Oct 13
Bench 135x5, 185x5, 200x4x3, 195x4 - I did not have a spotter and the last rep was difficult so I did sets of 4 with a back off set rather than sets of fives.
Dead lift 135x5, 225x5, 295x5x2, 295x3. I used the bar with the nice knurling so the grip was not an issue but I was gassed by the third set. I am gun shy about losing my form and screwing up the back again.
Assisted Dips -20 7, 7, 5 I focused on depth to make sure my shoulders are below my elbows at the bottom of the dip so I do the full range of motion

Tues Oct 17
Bench 140x5, 190x5, 200x5, 205x5, 200x4
Squat 140x5, 230x5, 290x5x3, I was not comfortable with the form. It felt like I was leaning too far forward on some reps.
Assisted Chins (-55) 7, 7, 5

Delayed going to gym due to a flu-like illness.
Squats 135x5, 225x5, 275x5x3. Backed off a bit because usually I will have DOMS tomorrow.
OH Press 115x5, 135x5, 155x5x3 sets. The press was difficult.
Assisted Dips tried a -20 assist but could only do one.
-50 assisted dips 5, 5, 6. I am surprised at how much I lost on the dips.

Thanks for the encouragement Jerry. I find this time of year difficult to get the time to go to the gym. The holidays change the routine and deadlines at work screw up my plans. Most of what I do is related to construction projects so the sense of urgency by management is only slightly less than that of surgery.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours

The month of infrequent workouts is showing. Squats were difficult today. Not helping was a back ache for the past several days. Even time on the inversion table last night did not yield much of an improvement. But during squats, the weakness was in the hip drive not the back. Now as I write this, several hours after the gym, my back feels great.
Squats 140x5, 230x5, 280x3x2, 280x1, 230x5. I did a back off set because I was frustrated at my performance. I had listened to a part of Ripp’s interview on the Art of Manliness about how older lifters should train. So, I tried to keep the weight up and the reps low. I also used the 50-pound bar. This is a bit thicker. I plan to use the 45-pound bar next time. We will see if it worked next week.
The most disturbing part of the interview was how Ripp was stating guys over 40 need to adjust their training because they are not young bucks anymore. First 40 years old does not seem old to me. At 66 I sometimes think I have a bit of young buck still in me. Those are the times I end up hurting myself. Anyway, today was not a good day for the squats.
OHP 120x5, 140x5, 150x5, 155x5 acceptable but I still need to work on these.
Dips Assisted (-40) 5, 5, 6. Lost a lot over the month so I need to get back on this. I apricated Oldster’s recommendation on Dips. I believe them to be wonderful assist work.
