Thanks. At least there's one event I won't completely embarrass myself in.

Tues., 5/24. 222.4# Wanted to flip tires & stuff, but there's a silly bullshit - ahem, I mean, metabolic conditioning - class that hogs the garage.

    Pullups: 4,3,3,3.

    OHP what the wife squats: 95 x 10, 115 x 5, 135 x 5, 145 x 5, 160 x 5,4, 135 x 5. (wife squatted 160 x 2,2)

    charcoal grilled chicken.

Wed., 5/25. Hot & humid. Of course I'm training outdoors.

    PC: 95 x 3,3.

    Tire Flip: 300# x 8. 600# x 14. getting better at this.

    Farmers Walks - the 300# tires have handles on the inner diameter, and plenty of space inside to cram plates - 300# for 30' x 2, 350 x 2, 370 x 2, 400 for some 3-7 second holds, then 15' x 2.

Triple bacon deluxe butterburger, cheese curds, malt. Been a long time.

    Fri., 5/27. 223#.

    Front Squat: 95 x 5, 115 x 5, 205 x 5, 235 x 3, 265 x 3, 285 x 2, 305 x 1. Not the prettiest squat I've ever done, but hey.

    OHP: 95 x 8, 115 x 5
    Squat: 95 x 5, 115 x 5 killing time while wife squats.

    Sled - looong chain: 250 x 1, 340 x 1, 1, 250 x 1.

Mon., 5/30. Five days out. The name of the game this week is: Stay Frosty. Don't tweak or kill myself, and not be sore at all Saturday morning. Light stuff, eat & sleep.

    Power Clean & Press: 40kg x..., 50 x 5, 55 x 3, 60 x 3, 55 x 3,2,5,5.

Off to friends' place for grillin' & chillin'. Turns out, they're making Erok-themed t-shirts to wear on Saturday. Feeling nervous now. I can't disappoint my fans.

Default The 17th Annual Capital City Strongman Challenge. Madison, WI

Wed., 6/01. 222#. The final push before the calm before the storm.

    Power Cleans - 95 x 5, 115 x 3,3,3.

Tire Flip - 300#: 13, 13, 13. to the back of the alleyway, then:

Farmer's Walk - to bring it back forward: 1,1,1.

    Pullups x 3.

That's it. If I haven't got it by now, not gonna have it by Saturday.

Sleep all the dreams. Eat all the things.

Sat., 6/04. Up and at them. Feeling rested, fed, & thoroughly caffffiennnnated. Run up to the registration booth right at 9:30: "I'm here! weigh me in?" "Nah, you're over 200." Great. I get the number 2 sharpied on my forearms. Double Deuce!

Event 1: Log Clean & Press.
Notes: The men's log is much smaller in diameter than the one at the gym, putting the handles at around 4" off the ground, and is 145# empty. Each man gets three attempts, and the weight goes up auction-style.
Equipment: I choose my Adidas 2.0 lifting shoes and 4" belt.
Execution: I wait for 175, kill it, then wait till 195, and kill that. I decide to push my luck and wait till 215. I clean it just fine, but my tiny triceps give out just as it gets overhead, and I lose it behind me. I hear the crowd go "ooOoo!" as I duck out of the way. There were a couple guys who would rest the fucking thing on their heads before completing the press (they had no necks, btw).
Verdict: Should have done 205 for the third attempt (the winning weight was 295, fyi.) Also, needed more strong.

    Event 2: Sled Drag.
Notes: Drag a 500# sled for 75 feet for time. Of course, the chain is long, adding more horizontal force component, and we're on a grass field.
    Equipment: running shoes & belt.
Execution: Grass is slick on shoes, but not on the sled. I manage to get into an interesting rhythm of some sort of upper body undulation/leg extension that takes me 40'3" down the field before I hit an ant hill. NO, seriously - I hit an ant hill, and it stopped me cold. I keep trying until the clock runs out. I made it further than the guy next to me, so there's that.
Verdict: Should have worn CLEATS. Dammit. I don't golf, or play futbol, so never thought of it. Other weak link: quads.

    Event 3: Stone Lift.
Notes: Five stones, all alike in dignity. 225, 250, 275, 300 and 325#. Lift each one and place it atop an oil drum, for time. No tacky. No tacky anywhere, for any reason. Just no.
Equipment: leather forearm sleeves (verry sexy), tape around each index finger, and about three ounces of chalk.
Execution: I started out pretty good on the 225, but somehow it slipped out of my hands before I could lap it. I run out the clock hugging the damn thing and screaming at it to move in the name of Odin.
Verdict: Pathetic. Need more strong. I promised the stone I would return for it. Grrr.

    Event 4: Tire Flip.
Notes: Flip a 600# tractor tire end-to-end for 75 feet for time. Tire does not have to be completely across the line, but must break the line.
Equipment: running shoes and sexy, sexy rage.
Execution: I attacked that damn thing. Did not let up. Did not show it mercy. Made it in 1:21.25 min. Beat the guy next to me by 1 second. Made it to a shady spot before I collapsed, and wife threw a bottle of water on my face. Friend said I had the 'get the hell off my lawn' look on my face.
Verdict: Better than expected. Need more conditioning, and more strong. The tire and I are friends now.

    Event 5: Farmer's Walk.
Notes: Carry a pair of old-timey milk cans 75' down the field and back for time. Each milk can is 175#, and spends the year stored in an undisclosed location, so the handles are in mint condition. (This is different from the ones available at the gym, whose handles have been beaten like rented mules into a smaller, more textured diameter.)
Equipment: Belt, mechanic's gloves, and steel-toed Red Wing boots I've had forever.
Execution: OhGODtheseareHeAVY. Got a ways downfield, then kept losing grip, especially on the L hand. Thing is, you can't just pick the damn thing up. You have to set the other one down, pick the dropped one up, reposition the handles on both, set up for a rack pull, and get the whole thing going over again. My grip gets so bad, I'm reduced to two steps, one step, one step, one step, half step, half step, half step, then at one point, both cans pendulum swing into my heels, effectively trapping my feet between them. I get 47' 7" before the clock runs out. (The winning time was a ridiculous 23 seconds. That guy was literally sprinting.) Wife comes out on the field to help me walk away. That's my Rocky Balboa moment, right there.
Verdict: Mechanic's gloves are too fabricy=slippery, making a weak grip weaker. Other guys had those rubber grippy gloves. Need those. The boots were a GOOD choice, as I noticed the steel toe saved my foot from being crushed at least once. (Note to self: take better care of those boots. They've earned it.) Removing the gloves, I discover that I ripped off a callous on my L hand. Annoying, but, the only injury I got all day. Need more grip, more traps.

Overall: I did not puke, did not shit myself (came close during the sled pull, tho), did not hurt myself, and, most importantly, DID NOT COME IN LAST! I declare this venture a success. I got a nice blue T-shirt. I also won a bit more respect from my friends & neighbors, whose yelling and cheering and homemade T-shirts really made a difference. Thank you guys.
But of course, I couldn't have done it without the tolerance & support of my wife, whose grudging acceptance of my latest crazy hobby allowed me to make a complete fool of myself in public and get away with it. Love you, baby. I'll let you borrow the T-shirt.

Pizza, doritos, chocolate milk with cognac, sirloin steak, chicken kabobs with mushrooms, red pepper, and lemon, and hot tubbing.

Oh, and I shaved off my beard (kept the porn 'stache for a day, though). Summer is here!

Sun., 6/05. I know, I shouldn't even be here, but wife was feeling inspired and wanted to squat. I loaded stuff back into my locker, and treated myself to a Victory Workout of 115# front squats, 135# back squats, 135# OHPs, and lots & lots of curlzZz.

Jamaican Jerk pork, Mango rundown salmon, fried plantain.

Yeah, it was. I had flashbacks of it last night while I was trying to get to sleep.

Default Apologies to Ed Bruce and Willie Nelson.

For some reason, when I was really little, The Electric Horseman was one of my favorite movies - second only to Empire Strikes Back. I had the soundtrack on 8-track cassette, and kept it in heavy rotation during every road trip, right in there with ESB, A New Hope, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. There was also plenty of Kenny Rodgers and Dolly Parton. The Beach Boys would come later.

Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be strongmen
Don't let 'em pick up stones and drag them big trucks
Make 'em be chiropractors and such.

Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be strongmen
Cause they'll never stay full and they'll always feel small
Even with those who don't lift.

A strongman ain't easy to love and he's harder to hold
He'd rather give you iron plates than silver or gold
Steel lever buckles and soft faded sweatpants
And date night ends at the buffet
If you can't overfeed him and he don't pass out
He'll probably just clean your plate.

A strongman loves chalky old squat racks and big tractor tires
Freshly cut tree trunks and Instagram women in tights
Them that don't outlift him won't like him and them that do
Sometimes won't know how to best him
He's so strong, he thinks different and his pride won't let him lift
Things that he thinks are too light.

    starting strength coach development program
Tues., 6/07. 222.2#. Took some measurements (inches, no flexing):

    Height: 5' 9.25"
    Neck: 17.5
    Chest: 44
    Gut: 43
    Waist: 41
    R bicep: 14
    L bicep: 14.5
    R forearm: 12
    L forearm: 12
    R thigh: 24
    L Thigh: 24
    R calf: 15.5
    L calf: 15

I'm the same height that Eugen Sandow was in 1902, but 20 pounds fatter, and a million times weaker.

In fact, when we compare these eight points of measurement using a derivation of the Whitcomb Area Rule, I come out with (math, math, math...) an average circumference of 26.4375". Sandow's is 27.125".

    r=C/(2pi), therefore:

    Erok: r=4.2077, giving us:
55.62 square inches, times 69.25 in height=3851.7 cubic inches of Erok.

    Sandow: r=4.3171, so:
28.55 square inches, times 69.25 in=4054.6 cubic inches of Sandow.

    Correcting for fatness, we find:

Erok: 222#/3851.7=.0576 pounds per cubic inch

Sandow: 202#/4054.6=.0498 pounds per cubic inch

Therefore giving me a Sandow coefficient of 1.157. This is all very scientific, so I don't blame you if you can't follow it.

We'll see what the summer brings. For now, I'm just taking it easy.

    Squat: 45x..., 95x5, 115x5, 165x5, 225 x 5,5,5.

    Bench:
45x..., 95x5,115x5, 135 x 5,5,5. I kinda perhaps almost sort of maybe missed these, a little bit. Not too much, though. Cuz they suck.

    DB incline: 20x12, 25x12,12
    DBCurlz: 20x10, 25x10,10

chicken, mushrooms, corn fritters, beet salad.
