Decided it was time to start a new log. I've been lifting off and on since 2008. I started lifting (at age 38, height 5'9" and weight 165), with the classic Starting Strength model, went through a fairly short linear progression, and spent some time with the Texas Method.

In 2009 or 2010 I took nearly a year long layoff, due to some hip issues that were exacerbated by my nidan (2nd degree black) belt test in Danzan Ryu Jujutsu.

Coming back, I started with linear progression, and made some good gains on the Texas Method again, which also brought my weight up to 175. I then started a one lift a day program courtesy of Andy Baker, but injured my back. While spending time just benching and pressing, and doing a lot of high rep low weight squatting and deadlifting, I also decided to lose weight. In retrospect, it was a bad decision to lose weight while injured and detrained. :-)

Back got better and I started working with Jordan, originally to finish up losing weight and also to get ready for my sandan (3rd degree black) belt test. Somehow I also decided I wanted to try out a lifting competition, and I asked Jordan to do my programming also.

Sandan test was last November, by then I was down to a mean 138 pounds or so. It went really well. I participated in Tom C's Strengthlifting meet in April, and put up a double bodyweight deadlift, and had a great time.

Currently, I am kind of taking it easy, back on the one lift a day program and weight is hovering at 150. I also hold a sandan in Aikido, and a nidan in Toyama Ryu Battodo, which is a Japenese sword art. I just found out that I am expected to test for sandan in that art this year, so I will be ramping up for that. And, not having enough fun stuff to do, I signed up for Tom's meet again in October.

This was the first day in a while that I was totally thrashed. Did the minimum. I suspect it was from deadlifting heavy on Tuesday. I was just off today, in so many ways!

    Bench
    45x5x2
    75x5
    100x3
    110x2
115x2 noticed grip on my left hand was way too narrow,
    115x1 fixed
    120x1
    125x5x2
125x4, failed rep 5, same problem with uneven grip, also bad bar path
    120x5
120x1 uneven grip so I racked it
    120x5
    115x5

    Squat (just warmed it up)
    45x5x2
    85x5
    115x2
    135x5

called it there (skipped assistance press and db bench)

    8/30/14

Broke from my one lift a day format to lift with Tom's lifting class.

    Squat
    45x5x2
    85x5
    115x3
    145x2
    165x2
    175x1
185x5 a touch high on all reps
175x5 got progressively lower, last 2 reps hit depth
    175x5 all reps deep

Time to video my squat sets again. Maybe a 5% reset too.

    Press
    45x5x2
    55x5
    65x3
    75x2
    85x5x3

    Deadlift
    95x5
    135x3
    185x3
    225x2
    245x1
    260x5

Press and deadlift were decent, just need to keep attacking my squat!

    Press
    45x5x3
    55x5
    65x3
    75x2
85x1 - target was 90x3x5 but this single was so slow that I figured I was still recovering from pressing on Sunday, so I took off 10%
    80x3x5

    Light Squat
    45x5x2
    85x5
    115x3
    140x5x2

    Close Grip Bench
    45x5x2
    65x5
    85x3
    100x2
110x5x3 (8.5, 8, 8.5) took awhile to get leg drive, my hips needed to warm up some

    KB Press
    8kgx12x3
