Have an appointment with the surgeon on Tuesday for the recurrence of my inguinal hernia (repaired 26 years ago w/o mesh). That repair was brutal, took six weeks to recover. It is my understanding that surgeons prefer the laparoscopic method for re-dos of open repairs. That way they don't have to deal with scar tissue from the previous operation as they are going in from the other side. I am hoping that is the kind of repair he will want to do.

Interestingly a day of work (I'm on my feet ~50% of the time) bothers it more than squats and deadlifts, which don't really bother it at all. You'd think it would pop out with a heavy set of squats/deadlifts but it doesn't happen. Perhaps the muscle tension in my whole body closes the opening temporarily.

Watching videos by surgeons for surgeons at professional conferences.

This guy seems like Rip. Says the more the patient does within reason within the first 48 hours, the less pain ultimately.

Said that the patients who "babied" themselves had worse recoveries.

Hope I have a like minded surgeon.

    Deadlift: 135x5, 225x5, 275x3, 315x1, 340x5, 325x5
    SGDL [straps]: 275x5

Made an interesting discovery: I missed deadlifts last week and, as I had done them on Thursday the week before, it makes 12 days between sessions instead of the usual 7. Rather than regressing because of the longer gap, the bar seemed to come off the ground much easier even though it was 5lb more than the previous week. I actually felt I could get 340x6 but figured, "why press it?"

Saw the surgeon today; he says he will do a laparoscopic TEP repair with mesh. He does not automatically do both sides *but* when he is in there he looks with the laparoscope and if there is a hernia on the other side he fixes it at that time. Soon as the insurance approval comes and an operating room is scheduled I will have it. Nurse at the surgery practice said most likely either Wed or Thurs of next week or the following week.

I suppose I am living on the edge doing my regular training with the hernia but as I have had it at least a year, I figure one more week or two can't hurt. (No, I forgot to ask. Anyway, we all know how doctors respond to things like this sometimes.) I figure the stronger I am going in, the higher level I will be on when I resume training, hopefully in 2-4 weeks post surgery.

    starting strength coach development program
Got a call from the surgeon's office today. Surgery for hernia (inguinal) repair is scheduled Wednesday so today is my last regular session for a bit. Hopefully all goes well. I won't know for sure until after the surgery but it looks as though the recovery is 2 to 4 weeks. This is to be a laparoscopic procedure in contrast to the original repair back in 1992, which was open and non-mesh. (On that one I was released for full activity, "no restrictions", after 6 weeks.)

There are all sorts of scare stories about not working out with a hernia because disaster will happen. Although I didn't squat more than 200lb back in 1992, I worked out until my surgery (and had a 3 month wait for that one as it was Kaiser HMO). Although I knew it was back for sure about a month ago, I only saw the surgeon last Tuesday so things are moving much faster. I figured that if I had no fear training *with* the hernia, then I would have no fear returning to training after the repair. Plus Rip claims he trained with one for years. How do you know that you have an injury that needs to be seen by a physician?

If you look on other sites, people are terrified about training after hernia repair. So many comments such as, "My doctor told me to wait X weeks so to be careful I waited X*2 weeks." All of the evidence I have read regarding modern repairs tends to support the idea that an earlier return to activity (within reason of course) results in a better recovery and less chance of recurrence.

Isn't it always the way it goes though, after several months of no progress I just started to make progress and then this.
