Have an appointment with the surgeon on Tuesday for the recurrence of my inguinal hernia (repaired 26 years ago w/o mesh). That repair was brutal, took six weeks to recover. It is my understanding that surgeons prefer the laparoscopic method for re-dos of open repairs. That way they don't have to deal with scar tissue from the previous operation as they are going in from the other side. I am hoping that is the kind of repair he will want to do.

Interestingly a day of work (I'm on my feet ~50% of the time) bothers it more than squats and deadlifts, which don't really bother it at all. You'd think it would pop out with a heavy set of squats/deadlifts but it doesn't happen. Perhaps the muscle tension in my whole body closes the opening temporarily.

Watching videos by surgeons for surgeons at professional conferences.

This guy seems like Rip. Says the more the patient does within reason within the first 48 hours, the less pain ultimately.

Said that the patients who "babied" themselves had worse recoveries.

Hope I have a like minded surgeon.

    Tuesday 8/21/17, 1:20pm, M 61yo, 5'9.5", BW=185.6lb, Waist=32.5in, Kcal/day (7 day average)=2999

    Deadlift: 135x5, 225x5, 275x3, 315x1, 340x5, 325x5
    SGDL [straps]: 275x5

Made an interesting discovery: I missed deadlifts last week and, as I had done them on Thursday the week before, it makes 12 days between sessions instead of the usual 7. Rather than regressing because of the longer gap, the bar seemed to come off the ground much easier even though it was 5lb more than the previous week. I actually felt I could get 340x6 but figured, "why press it?"

Saw the surgeon today; he says he will do a laparoscopic TEP repair with mesh. He does not automatically do both sides *but* when he is in there he looks with the laparoscope and if there is a hernia on the other side he fixes it at that time. Soon as the insurance approval comes and an operating room is scheduled I will have it. Nurse at the surgery practice said most likely either Wed or Thurs of next week or the following week.

I suppose I am living on the edge doing my regular training with the hernia but as I have had it at least a year, I figure one more week or two can't hurt. (No, I forgot to ask. Anyway, we all know how doctors respond to things like this sometimes.) I figure the stronger I am going in, the higher level I will be on when I resume training, hopefully in 2-4 weeks post surgery.
