Yeah Jerry, I have to remember that there's no real need for me to rush anywhere, anymore. As for the workout in NC, my progress has been so steady for the last couple months, I'm a little anxious to keep it going for as long as it will last! And, I had another great workout today to keep me fired up.

    OHP: 45 x 5 x 2, 65 x 5, 85 x 3, 105 x 2, 128 x 5, 110 x 5 x 2 bo
    Romanian DL: 165 x 5, 195 x 5, 225 x 5, 255 x 5, 280 x 5
    CGBP (no touch): 120 x 8, 145 x 6, 173 x 6
Pinch grip: made my first-ever attempt with two 35 lb. Oly. plates. They just cleared the floor, but I couldn't hold them. Still very happy with the attempt! Then I did two, 6-sec. holds with my grip block loaded to 57 1/2 lbs.
    Rev. curl: 65 x 6, 90 x 6* PR

I'm still surprised by the steady progress I'm making at my age, and with a "touchy" back, but I have been eating better for awhile and am in a better place mentally than I was a few months ago. If this continues, I'm expecting some very good lifts (for me) by the end of the year!

I screwed up during my workout today. I'd planned on using 187 for my last work set on BP for 5 reps, and surprisingly mis-loaded the bar, first time in years that's happened. I had it five pounds light on one side, felt it when I unracked it, but did the set anyway. So I upped my back off sets five pounds to make up for it. Other than that, everything else went well. Next week I'm going to try some heavy singles to see where I stand, then figure some goals to shoot for by the end of the year.

I had to see my chiro yesterday, my low back has been bothering me for the last few weeks, but it's much better today and my workout seemed to reflect that.

I get a certain satisfaction from my grip/forearm work...always been a fan of the old-time grip masters. I fully expect to pinch grip two 35 lb. Olympic plates (smooth sides out, of course) in October, and will then aim for the 45s! Anyone familiar with Karl Norberg? That was one powerful old man, saw a great photo of him holding an Olympic bar straight out in front of him with one hand!

Yes I have read about him. I have two grip machines, one is a Sorinex that use use both hands on, the other is one is used one hand at a time. I fashioned it after something I saw on a video by Joe Kinney, first man to close the Captain of Crush #4 gripper. Both of these are plate loaded. I guess if you look on YouTube you will see videos of Joe Kinney crushing fill beer cans. He is an interesting person.

Today's workout was just squat and bench press, working up to a couple good singles in each, to give me an idea what to aim for at year's end.
    Bwt - 194 1/2
    SQ: 135 x 5, 175 x 3, 215 x 2, 255 x 1, 285 x 1, 315 x 1 (all smooth, felt good for about 330)
    BP: 95 x 5, 125 x 3, 155 x 2, 190 x 1, 205 x 1, 215 x 1 ( feel I might have gotten 220, but I'm not rushing it)
So based on these, my goals for the end of the year are 350 SQ and 235 BP. I'll work up to singles in the OHP and DL on Thursday, and maybe try a pinch grip PR.

Singles on OHP and DL today, started out well but didn't quite end up as hoped. I'd reached my last attempt in the OHP with a weight I haven't even tried in more than thirty years. I was all ready to take it off the rack when my mom walked in behind me. I knew she was there and probably wanted something, but to her credit, she stayed quiet till I took my attempt. Unfortunately it still threw me off, and I just missed the lift. Still, what I've been doing has been working great, and I expect to get close to a bodyweight press (once again) by the end of the year. As for the DL, I just got a little too ambitious, too soon, and couldn't finish 385. Still expect to go back over 400 by year's end.

    CGBP (no touch): 125 x 8, 155 x 4, 180 x 5*PR (nice strong set)
    Pinch grip: 62 1/2 x two 4-sec. holds PR
    Rev. curl: 70 x 5, 100 x 1*PR, 110 (no go)

I just found my old thread on here, and it's hard to believe it's been three years since I posted! I've kept up with my training as best I could, but this last year has been especially tough. From a strained quad, to chronic knee pain, then three separate tendon sprains...One calf and both forearms. I'm over the worst of it now, and with my 65th birthday coming up, I felt the need to get things under control again, and see what I'm still capable of. I'll be starting fresh on Monday after taking a 10-day layoff, and with any luck, I'll be competing at least one more time next April in the NYS meet. Good or bad, I'll try to keep my log going through that time.

    Dude!

Welcome back. It's great to have some more geezerish company here, and good luck in preparing for your meet.

Thanks Mark, it's good to be back. You know my last two meets were about 4 1/2 years apart, when I was 55 and 60, and I was lucky enough to beat the State records each time. Now here it is almost five years later, and I have an opportunity to move the standards up in the 65-69 age group. It all depends on keeping the aches and pains manageable, and my natural tendency to push hard, under control. I've already checked the current State records in the division, and I know I can easily surpass them, if I stay healthy enough.

I see you have plans in motion for competition next year also, and I wish you the best. I know you're a busy man, even after your own retirement, and I have to say your drive and enthusiasm has helped motivate me. Keep it up!
