I haven't been in an LA Fitness in 10+ years. Maybe I'll swing by and check it out... it does have "cheap" going for it. If nothing else, it could be good for the entertainment factor. And come to think of it... the last one I went to had the freeweight room next to the yoga room...
Being that it's family Y, I don't see much of the latest fads in fitness, but this morning I was lucky. The first was the pullup/hanging crunch combo, which actually looked pretty damn hard. The second was my favorite, Bulgarian lunge? / lateral dumbbell shoulder raise combo. Yes, they also looked hard, but mostly just stupid.
Today was a wonderful day at the old LA Fitness. The usual group of four or five of us that show up to lift were there along with some new, err "talent"....
First up, and a complete new one for me, seated overhead press in the smith machine.... with a spotter and about 6inches ROM. The real kicker though was the grunting with each rep!
Next, the 18-19ish, clueless genetic freak. The kid was pushing 6'2" and a soft 250 and squatting in the smith machine... with four plates per side and of course the requisite 1/8 ROM.
To finish it up, a young bro came over to use the other squat rack. Looks over at my warms ups and promptly does 2x10 with 135. At that point I had completed my warm up progression and loaded my work set, a paltry 245, for the day. Not to be outdone, young bro quickly loads another plate on his bar and dives in. And dive he did, straight to the safeties which he thankfully had left in. With some serious grunting and knee implosion, he managed to get it back up and on the rack. Then replaces the 45's with 25's and proceeds to do basically the same thing. Clears the bar and leaves. On the plus side, his depth was actually pretty good!
