could've been using the term in a 'different' context, which would explain alot of things

They are interested in your advice. The difficulty comes when they hear it takes a LOT of effort and hard work. The recommendations to eat a lot while doing the SS novice program are difficult for a lot of people to wrap their heads around. Being fat has plenty of negative implications, and it is easy to understand why someone wouldn't want to pack it on. The dangling incentive carrot of "you can take it off later" is also hard to overcome. It is true (and once you know how to take fat off, pretty simple), but again, the perception of really hard work is not appealing to most people.
In my opinion, it should be presented like this: Gaining strength (and muscular size) is MUCH easier when eating a caloric surplus. It is possible to gain strength while maintaining a given bodyweight, but the trainee has to manage recovery & eating significantly more, and is considerably difficult. As someone described it on this forum (John Hanley, perhaps?), the trainee forces himself / herself into the advanced style of training. It will work (everything does), but it is INCREDIBLY difficult for a novice to stick with.
I feel your frustration. It's difficult as fuck to get other guys to do meaningful training. It's hard... most people want to stare in the mirror as they do endless amounts of bicep curls.
I've been told that I'll get hemorrhoids... multiple times. An acquaintance who's a doctor once said to me, "Yep, lots of guys who lift heavy weights come in with hemorrhoids". Seriously, what do you say to that?
I'm going to try this approach!
