I think of this thread almost every time I go to the gym. I could add something funny or dumb I see at the gym almost after every workout. We could add up all the stupid or funny stuff and put it in a sticky. However, I supposed the sticky would soon become a book.
I saw one last night that made me chuckle the whole time I worked out. So I'm on the 1 squat rack in the gym, next to me is a guy doing bent rows on what I will call a squat stand. After completion, he puts the weights on the hooks in the front of the stand. Some giant dude comes up and asks to work in with him. I hear the bent row guy say okay. Just as I finish my set, I look over and the giant guy has take all the weights off. Strung them all over the floor and is curling with only 10 pounds on each side of the bar. After he finishes 1 set of about 15 with much huffing and puffing, he walks off. He didn't say a darn word or anything and I never saw him again the rest of the night. The look of the guy that was doing rows was priceless.
A young guy around 20 years old is usually at my gym. He deadlifts consistenly, and I have seen his DL's progress steadily. He has been struggling to get a 315 one rep, but I sort of keep encouraging him, with advice that usually is ignored (eat more, be sure to reecover, blah blah blah).
Yesterday I ask him, hey man, did you hit that that 315 yet? He says, no, now am I am cutting. Trying to drop some pounds ( the young guy has absolutely no reason to cut, his bf % is low. He should be eating more imho).
I gave him a look and said nothing before he explained "Yeh, I want to get a DL that's twice my body weight, so I am going to drop some pounds."
As in, I give up because it is getting hard and discouraging. Oh well. I will keep eating and getting stronger. No matter what everyone else does.
And he did crossfit?! That's some fucking justice right there
Lol stop being so nice the guy. He doesn't deserve it. I wonder where this relative strength desire comes from in people who don't compete in weight class lifting... I guess he perceives it to be easier than getting a 315 deadlift...

Trust me I lost all respect for the kid. He is not even in his prime and already backing away. Pissed me off, I am 50 and am closing in on a 405 DL. What excuse could a healthy 20 something have not to keep grinding away?
How can relative strength be so important? And yes he does not compete, so it seems to illogical to me. It seems like a shortcut to me. And a huge missed opportunity to get the mental gainzzzz that come with the discipline sticking to a program.
But alas, youth is wasted on the young. They don't realize what an opportunity it is to be in that training window. It is almost...almost effortless at that age. I will stop there, now I am sounding like a jealous old man. Get off my lawn you kids!
