Not TOO thin, so 15 up to 19 gauge will work fine. Too thin, and it will cut the throat and while death is assured after that, cutting off the blood flow to the brain with a slightly thicker wire puts someone unconscious faster.

But then clothesline can work well too.

    you guys,
    its a cable machine,
    use the cables,
do it right and you won't choke him out,
snap that neck like a good old hanging.

    disclaimer,
they hung white guys for their crimes,
I am not going kkk on him.

I don't remember when or why I learned this, but the word for that is "garrote".

I was thinking about using the cable from the machine instead

Typically 1/4 to 3/8 inches. This can work if:

    1. You can pull enough slack to wrap around the miscreant's neck. Not as easy as you might think.

    2. Wear gloves in case there are snags on the cable strands. Otherwise you might cut your fingers and leave DNA evidence.

Since you're a former Law Enforcement Professional: Wouldn't this be a good idea, anyway, to prevent leaving any stray epithelials on the cable? I mean, you're going to leave some skin cells on that sucker whether you get cut or not, right?

Evil? Us? Perish the thought! As they say in Texas, some folks just need killin'. ;-)

Living about 10K km away from Texas, I say the same thing every day.
