The shit show continues. Today it was the trainer having his 50-something client doing light weight LTEs. Upper arms perpendicular to the floor, elbows bent a bit less than 90 degrees. Two inch ROM, at the most, and that is no exaggeration. After that, they went to the bicep curl machine and repeated the same ROM.

Another trainer had his 60-something client doing the classic "balance on a Bosu ball" trick.

Strength really is a foreign concept to a lot of trainers.

Good idea! Most of these spectacles occur at the gym near my office in Scottsdale, where my employer supplies a bit of a subsidy and I can get in a quick squat session over lunch. It is on my list of resolutions to get to your gym at least once a month, though, if not for coaching, at least a workout with like-minded folks.

After a long hiatus, I finally have something new to contribute. I haven't had to deal with gym idiots since my company moved our office downtown. When they announced the move, I informed my boss I would be tendering my resignation because of an intense loathing of urban environments. My boss (in desperation) asked me what it would take to keep me. I told her a gym so that I would not have to leave the building except for arriving and departing from work. Lo and behold, I have a power rack, barbell, plates, and other various accouterments. There were some treadmills leftover from when this office building had a "fitness room" and a Vectra machine. Those work to keep other employees off my setup. 80% of the time, it is just me. Other times, it's the ladies in the office power walking or doing their toning exercise. Until the other day!

I had two women come to my desk about an hour before my normal workout time. They said that there was a half naked man in the fitness room and that he was smoking and had menaced them. So I go down there and sure enough, there was a vagrant who was at this point barely covered by sweat paints that would have too large on me at 6'1" & 225lbs. He was about 5'6" 130lbs. He absolutely reeked of body odor and acrid smoke, his teeth were the crusty crack user teeth, and he entire demeanor was that of trash. I politely told him he needed to leave, to which he retorted that he was offended. I of course told him his offence was irrelevant and then more strongly recommended he leave. I watched him get dressed and then escorted him out of the building. I then went about cleaning the ashes off the treadmill and water fountain, sanitized the viscous and slimey crap off the benches where he was rolling "cigarettes", and just took inventory of what the building crew needed to do.

Of course I was the office star and women were fawning over me, the guys were coming up to me wanting to know why I didn't grab them for backup, etcetera etcetera... That should be the end of the story, right?

    Nope.

Yesterday the creep was back! This time however, the maintenance guy was watching the cameras and saw the guy going into the gym. By the time he arrived on scene, the bum was naked except for a shirt. My shirt to be exact. (I have a tension rod in the mens changing area that I hang my shirt and towel to dry since I sweat like crazy). Maintenance guy just leaves and locks the door (trapping the bum) and called the cops. By the time the police arrived, he was completely naked and bathing in the toilet. Not next to the commode and using toilet water, but standing in the toilet bathing while smoking. He is literally 3 paces away from the shower.

Obviously the bum is deranged, but now because of him we have a physical key and lock to get into the fitness area. I have no problem with that, because now I know even fewer people will be down there!

I was going to squat but this rooster-haired guy got to the rack before I did. He put the pins at the lowest setting on the squat rack. He then did about ten rows with the empty bar. He threw a couple right hooks and posed in the mirror. Then he did some pull-ups. Tens on the bar, a few more rows, playing with his phone, some dancing, then dropped to the floor and did some pull-ups. Another fifty pounds on the bar, three more rows, more posing, jogging. I was annoyed at first, but eventually I found myself laughing at it. This went on for about ten minutes before he disappeared without putting the weights back. I went to find him and he was in the next room over doing side kicks.

Because this all started in a Les Mills gym I thought I'd provide some information about Les Mills himself, it might interest some or, more likely, horrify others.

it would appear its (mostly) not Les' fault

It all started with one man. In 1968, four-time Olympian Les Mills started his first gym in Auckland, New Zealand. It was a simple operation, basic strength and cardio training for a small community of athletes. Now, 50 years on, it is the hub of a global revolution – a vibrant destination where the world’s top fitness talent create new ways to get fit, combining music with movement and then taking it to the world.

It was Les’ son Phillip Mills who drove the change.

Phillip started working in the family gym after school. Back then he was charged with motivating exercisers by delivering magazines to them as they pedaled away on indoor cycles. It’s fair to say it’s a role he wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about. But all that changed when he returned from a UCLA track scholarship. He had witnessed the birth of the aerobics phenomenon and as a result his enthusiasm for motivating exercisers had been kicked into a higher gear. So in 1980 he eagerly jumped back into the family business to create group workouts driven by the beat of modern music. Those early aerobic programs drew queues down the street and Phillip could sense the real power of group fitness.

Together with his wife Jackie, a doctor and former gymnast, Phillip spent years developing the concept, learning first-hand what makes – and breaks – a good fitness class. In 1990 they changed the game entirely by introducing weights – BODYPUMP was born.

Used to workout in the early morning at the globo, but have been lazy and going in the early afternoon. Whole different crew of lifters. There was one guy who was quarter squatting then doing bench with 5 inch ROM. Nothing special, except this dude looked EXACTLY (and I mean exactly) like Charles Manson. Even had that wild look in his eye. His sweat towel was a really beat up terrycloth towel, that looked like it was from the 60s tool.

Also, they upgraded the lighting at the gym. Used to be really dim in there, but not anymore. Now there is a super-bright HID light (like the kind in 7-11 parking lots). Each light is positioned right over the flat benches. Forget trying to focus on a point on the ceiling, it's now like trying to (not) focus on the white-hot sun. Seriously thinking about bringing in sunglasses or a welder's helmet just for bench press.

    starting strength coach development program
Got a vivid reminder of why I train in my garage and not at the Globogym anymore this past week. Timing was such that the globogym fit my schedule to stay on track for training. As usual, watched a group of Bro's doing 1/4 squats for sets of 20 with no visible work, but their new variation of deadlifts was something totally new to me. They went straight to 225, no build up, did one set of 3-4 and then.... started alternating sets swapping a 25# plate from one side to the other for "unbalanced" lifts. Honestly one of the silliest ideas I've ever seen. The real gem though, was listening to Bro#1 explain to his pal, that his buddy was a trainer at some college and they really focused on unbalanced lifts to build balance and agility. It made absolutely no sense at all if you asked even simple questions... Anyone else seen this new trend of "unbalanaced" lifts?
