Hi all - I'd like to buy a pair of shoes for my son, who's 13 1/2. He's not going to keep them long because he's still growing, so I don't want to pay too much if I can help it. I'm wondering if there are good deals to be had right now for good quality shoes. Any sale maybe? He's size 8, FWIW.

I like my Sabo shoes. I buy them from a small store in Saskatchewan, our most underrated province.

That store has excellent service. They ship very quickly and my packages get here (Ontario) the next day.

Those shoes are cheap (prices on that site are in Canadian dollars) and the size charts are accurate, both for me and my husband.

Also, those shoes are Russian, which I personally find pretty cool.

I've spotted used Do-win shoes on eBay before. I've also seen them on an app called Poshmark where I'm constantly looking for good used cowboy boots. I need to buy some myself, I'm still hard headed and lift in PF Flyers.

I normally wouldn't recommend the Adidas Powerlift 4 to a serious lifter but they would probably be fine for a kid. One sale at rogue for 89 right now. I think that Reebok and Adidas all offer various discount programs as well that might make the cost a little more palatable. Do-wins are pretty reasonable and would probably hold up at least long enough for him to grow out of them.

New Balance bought them out and kept them alive. The pandemic has made them pretty scarce but I can still find my size. I like them because they are a wider last than Converse Chuck Taylors and fit my feet a lot better. They are also much higher quality and for a while you could even get them USA made. It helps for me that I'm not giving Nike any of my money. I really have always liked this type of shoe for lifting, but now that I'm getting into Starting Strength I'm looking for dedicated lifting shoes as Rip makes a great point about their merits.
