    Default Use for standard plates?

High school PE teacher here. A guy from the community just donated a bunch of stuff to our weight room including a few hundred pounds of standard weights. I was wondering if there are any iron historians around who know anything about these weights, including whether or not they have any value. Also wanted to know what, if any, practical use there is for standard weights. We do not have any standard barbells. Thanks!

They are useless in the weight room. Sell them for scrap.

A while back, I looked into the viability of machining a 2" inner diameter hole into the plates and then just reweighing them and writing the weights on them. It's cheaper and easier to just buy new plates.

Cast iron isn't worth a lot right now but it a few hundred pounds should still bring a few bucks at a scrap yard.

At current prices, I think iron is worth $20/lb, so the 200lbs he brought to the school he could have gotten $20 at a recycler. Not sure why he didn't just take them to a scrap metal place and donate the $20!

Math is not your forte, Ed. Or maybe it's the typing.

It's my typing thankfully. Cast iron scrap is about $200/ton or $0.10 per pound right now so the 200lbs of cast iron should be worth $20 although some recyclers won't accept such small quantities. I did the math correctly, but yeah, I don't think I could have typed that more wrong. Time to go see what I can do in the squat rack!
