    Chad,

You are a strong young fellow. While watching the 395 x 5 I kept wondering "how can you lift that weight when you take that much time between lifts?" It's a testament to your strength but wouldn't it be easier to do them more quickly? I know that when I fail on the multiple lifts it's because I take too much time. Still, you are getting very strong.

    Thanks, Carson.

When it comes to doing heavy sets, I just can't do them quickly, especially on the later reps. I need to catch my breath enough to be able to take a deep breath without the fear of blacking out mid-rep. Well, that and the need to strengthen my resolve to get the next rep.

Default 2019/04/27 -- session with Adam Skillin

I had a session today with my favorite SSC, Adam Skillin. Yep, I'd experienced some form creep.

    Squats:
    275x3x5

    2 minutes rest, beltless.

Here, I need to narrow my stance just a little bit, and I need to get my knees set sooner.

    Bench press:
    237.5x2x3

It turns out I've been touching a little higher on my chest than I should. I'm also holding the bar more directly over my chin than my shoulders at the top. I also need to start driving the bar back (towards my head) as soon as it comes off the chest. (I'm pretty sure there's an illustration in SS:BBT that shows this diagonal line.) I've been starting it off more purely vertical off my chest and then bringing it back towards my head as it gets higher.

    Deadlifts:
    400x3, 325x5x52

I was shooting for 400x5, but only managed 3. Adam suggested I do deadlifts first and light squats second on deadlift day. We'll see how that works.

    My form problems were these:
    - My stance was too wide.
    - I was setting up too close to the bar.
    - I was dropping my hips during my setup.

The first two of these are pretty easily fixed. The last one will take some work. I guess I'd forgotten that the setup position for the deadlift is supposed to be uncomfortable.

I did my heavy bench press workout for the week on Saturday when I saw Adam, so just assistance work today.

    Seated press:
    100x5x5

Another suggestion from Adam was to do seated press in this slot instead of just doing light standard press. He's seen pretty good results in driving up the press with these. We'll see how it goes.

    LTE:
    97.5x12x3

    Dips:
    10-minute EMOM: 12x5

Well, it was planned as a 10-minute EMOM, but because I didn't have the stress of bench pressing, I went for an extra couple of sets.

BTW, Carson, my SSC agrees with you on doing these quickly. The vote's two-to-one, so I'm going to give that a try.
