    Light Day

Heavy Deadlift 210 lbs. 2 x 3 (Almost wimped out and went for 207.5, but decided that would be silly. Good decision.)

Box Squats: 70 % x 135 = 95 lbs. 2 x 5 (Getting so much better at these. Hold at bottom for full second.)

    Light Bench Press: 85ish% x 110 = 95 lbs. 2 x 5

    Intensity Day

I'm finally feeling a bit of confidence on the squat, and asked my coach if I could try a 5 pound jump for today. Mind you, I have never done a five pound jump. I started with the 2.5 pound jumps on the second week. So this was a big deal for me. The plan was for me to attempt a single set of 5; but maybe I'd have to do it in two sets.

Squat 140 lbs. 1 x 4 ; 1 x 1 The first four were quite good, but on the fifth one I went too far down and then lost tightness. So I had to rest and do the fifth one after a few minutes rest. I'm pretty happy about it, though, because a five pound jump is pretty huge for me. Next weeks I'll go up to 142.5 for two sets of three. Starting to feel marginally "strong" with these, and not too embarrassed by them. (No one needs to know it's taken me 7 or 8 months to get here!)

Press 72 lbs. 1 x 4; 1 x 1 Same thing as with the squats. The first four went well, then I struggled for a long time with that last one. Had to do that last rep after a few minutes. So next week I go up to 73 pounds, for 2 x 3.

Also, I did a bunch of chin-up work as always. I don't usually write it here because it's a PIA to write things like, "Hung out at the top for 9 seconds" or "3.5 reps with the black band". But I do work on that regularly.

Those are some nice lifts, EW, especially with a big jump in weight. And you stared down a heavy deadlift!

Thanks Codger. I won't be doing 5 pound jumps again, probably, but I was itching to make some good progress. Going to USSF Nationals in January, and would rather not be the weakest in my weight class if I can help it. (It might happen, and that's okay. Just competing against myself, and I know I've gotten stronger, so that's a win.)

    Anyway, here's today's log.

This post gets two days' logs, because I didn't get around to posting Wednesday's earlier.

    Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017:

    Light Day:

Heavy Deadlift: Accidentally misloaded to 192.5 lbs, and did 3 reps. (Too easy!)
Corrected weight to 212.5 and managed 2 good reps, failed 3rd.
Considered trying again later, but the floor space was being used by a high school baseball coach making his team do practice pitching with little plastic balls.
Either way, I repeat this weight next week.

    Light Box Squat: 70% x 140 = 100 lbs. 2 x 5
    Light Press: 85% x 72 = 62 lbs. 2 x 5

Also, I managed a real chin-up. It was the slowest, most labored chin-up in the world, but I did it. Whoo-hoo! A year ago I couldn't even hang from the bar for more than a half-second without falling right off.

Incredible work! Chin-ups are a huge challenge for most people. Congrats!

Once again, I'll put several training sessions in one post. Things were a little weird because of the holidays.

I thought I put two days' worth in the last post, but it looks like I didn't. So:

Friday, Dec 22, 2017: Intensity Day
    Squat: 142.5 lbs. 1 x 5 (PR)
    Bench: 112.5 lbs. 1 x 5
    2 chin ups

Sunday, Dec 24, 2017 (At different facility, with less than two days rest since last time)
    Volume Squat 130 lbs 5, 5, 5, 4, 3, 3
Volume Press 65 lbs. 5 x 5 (Should have been 68.5, but no microplates)

Felt under-recovered from Friday, as expected.

Wednesday Dec 26, 2017 Light Day (At the alternate facility)
Heavy Deadlift Attempt: Supposed to repeat 212.5, but no microplates. Attempted 215, but couldn't get it past my shins.
Attempted 205, but couldn't get it off the ground. Maybe did too many warm-ups?
    Box Squats: 100 lbs. 2x5
    Light Bench: 95 lbs. 2x5

Thursday Dec. 28, 2017 Intensity Day
Squat 145 lbs. 2 reps, failed 3rd. (nothing in my notes about trying another set. Coach says repeat next Friday & use 145 for volume calculation.)
    Press: 73 lbs. 2 x 3

Monday, January 1, 2018 Volume Day
Volume Squat: 132 lbs. 5, 5, 5, 4, 3, 3 (last rep, was stuck at the bottom for two whole seconds, but managed to get up. Yay!)
    Volume Press: 70 lbs. 5, 4, 3, 3

    Wed, Jan 3, 2018 Light Day/DL
    Box Squat: 101.5 lbs. 2x5
    Light Bench: 100 lbs. 2x5
    Chin-Ups: 2x2
    Deadlift: Repeat 212.5 lbs. 1, 2, 1

The DL was supposed to be 2x3, but I just could not lift the damn thing. Argh. Maybe I need more protein. And better callouses on my thumbs.

Friday, January 5, 2018 Intensity Day

Squat: 145 lbs. 1 x 5 Managed all five this time, but just barely. This is more than I weighed when I started all this, so pretty heavy for me. PR.

Press: 72.5 lbs. 5 x 3 Switching to regular LP triples to prepare for meet on the 14th.

Light DL: 135 lbs. 1 x 5 Just to toughen up the skin on my thumbs for hook grip. DL once a week isn't doing it.

    Chin-Ups: 1.5, 1.5, 1.5, 1, 1, 1 Tried and tried, but just couldn't manage 2 in a row this time.

Congrats on the squat PR, Edlerwanda! And I bet you hit two chin-ups next time. Who knows how many you'll be doing by the end of the year.
