    4DIP, Week 6 assigned run

    1 mile: 7:48

Total distance was 2.5 miles. In the middle, I ran a 1 mile split as fast as I could tolerate. The 1 mile run was sandwiched between some swiftish walking (14 minute mile pace).

Hover Bench (stop 4" above chest): 275x3x2

This was RX for 4 sets; elbow is killing me though.

    Press: 135x1, 175x1, 205x1, 225x1

Press hurts less, and hurts not at all until I get north of roughly 200 lbs. So I took a single at two plates.

Was able to make a doctor appointment for tomorrow at 0900; just an initial visit so I'm skeptical about getting resolution in a single trip, but I want to get the ball rolling and see if there's a simple fix for what ails me.

Last training session this week; I'm taking Christmas off.

    Squat: 255x3x4, tempo

    Feeling good.

    Deadlift: 405x3, 370x3x3

    RDL: 285x8x3

    Leg Extension: 40/40x10x3

    Press: 200x3, 3, 1; 185x5

    Bench: 205x8, 225x8, 245x8

So I thought that the bench hurt more than the press; press hurt like hell today and bench not at all. New hypothesis, "warmth" is the variable. I think second lift feels better because I'm warmer.

    General Update

Saw the doc. The PCP ordered some imagery to rule some stuff out, and mentioned some possible tendinopathy treatment modalities. He referred me to OT/PT while awaiting imagery results.

OT/PT ran me through some physical tests, and said I'm not presenting as tendinopathy, so she looked at the X-ray, which had come in by this point. Then she took me across the hall to Ortho.

Chief of Ortho, based on the x-ray, says I've got a good-sized olecranon osteophyte (a bone spur right on the tip of the elbow) with some concomitant calcification of one of the many tendons in the area.

With bone spurs, I guess if they don't hurt you just leave 'em alone. If they do hurt, you shave them off. This one hurts. Given that I've tried to self-rehab this as if it were tendinopathy for a long time, he presented some options:

    1) Try PRP or saline injections to treat the tendon calcification to see if that eliminates pain in the range of motion: Several injections over a period of time which might be weeks or months, and then get surgery if that doesn't fix it (resolution some time in late 2021 most likely, once all modalities are expended, plus whatever amount of time necessary to regain strength). Or:

    2) Do the surgery, and excise the calcified area of the tendon during that surgery. Begin PT/OT followed by normal motion (for me, barbells as soon as tolerable). Resolution some time around March 2021 (plus strength-regaining time on a prolonged LP).

So I opted for 2. Headed to surgery in a few weeks' time; in the meantime I'll be training to tolerance, trying to maintain, maybe even make a low-key PR or two Lord willing.

I realize that immediately post-op, all barbells will be off-limits. A bunged elbow means no deadlifts or squats either (though coach has mentioned SSB squats; haven't seen one of those on post yet), so maybe I'll do some leg press stuff until I can grip a barbell again.

All things considered, I am relieved. I have tried grip-width hacks, range of motion hacks, volume hacks, every method of rehab I can think of, and wondered why I just wouldn't get better. It's a bit of a relief to have the answer, and to know that nothing I could've done would have un-deformed my bone. I'll look at 2021 as a rebuilding year, and get on with things.

Hoping for a speedy recovery there, Geoff. You’re certainly tough and determined enough to do whatever it takes.

I appreciate the concern, brother. I'm confident in time I'll be back up to snuff.

    4DIP, W8D3

    Press: 185x5x4

    Bench (Myo-Reps: Set of 15, followed by 4xAMRAP with only 30 seconds rest): 185x15, 8, 8, 6, 4, 4

Wicked pump from the myo. I was surprised how few reps I could get on 30 seconds rest.

Elbow growled today, but didn't full-on bark.

    Squat: 315x1, 365x1, 385x1, 285x3x4

There's a "Leader Board" in the company gym; I decided to get some singles on there. 385 gets me 3rd place.

    Bench: 275x1, 315x1, 335x1

I'm paying for this now, but I got 335 up for a single, which puts me in 1st on the leader board.

    Deadlift: 415x3, 385x3x3

415 puts me in 5th on the leader board. Even at my best, I'd only be 3rd ... There's a Drill Sergeant with a verified 520, and our XO has a 570 from last week. Decent pullers here.
