    I'm coaching (uncertified) my friend's progress as he uses Starting Strength training methodology to get stronger. His Novice log can be found here:

    Tim's Log

    Background: Tim is an Army Officer, age 30, 74 inches height. The long and short of the LP: We ran from January to April, got shut down 5 weeks for COVID, and then resumed LP from May until last week.

    Begin:
    Bodyweight: 173 -> 195 (high of 201)

    Squat: 105x5x3 -> 305x5x3, 315x5x1, 370x1

    Bench: 105x5x3 -> 190x5x3, 230x5x1, 260x1

    Press: 65x5x3 -> 120x5x3, 128x5x1, 142.5x1

    Deadlift: 175x5 -> 335x5, 375x1

    So yes, lots of improvement.

    After LP, during some pivot work/introductory Texas Method, he achieved a squat at 320x5 and a deadlift at 340x5.

    Intermediate Plan

    Three-day Texas Method, bench focused. "Light day" will be his pressing; Volume and Intensity will be bench work.

    W1D1: Volume Day

    Squat: 275x5x5

    Bench: 200x5x5

    Deadlift: 295x5x2

    Most squat volume Tim's ever gotten at any weight that matters; he was smoked and a little nauseated by the end of the entire session.

    Texas Method, W1D2 and W1D3: Not Conducted

    Tim's sick. He came back from vacation feeling a bit under the weather, and was fighting through, but not now. Symptoms don't match the COVID business, but they've knocked him out for the week. If he's back up on his feet, we'll reattempt Sunday, with volume day, matched loads from last week, and just try to do next week what should've happened this week.

    Illness recovery (Conducted 21 July)

    Squat: 225x5x3

    Bench: 185x5x3

    Deadlift: 275x3x3

    Tim's still crawling out of the hole, but his symptoms are gone. His wife got sick too but is nearly recovered. His daughter came down ill for a day or two but shrugged it off.

    Looking back on the sum total of symptoms, my guess is he got the Rona. Guess it's good I was in Washington at the time.

    Layoff-Bridge Intensity Day (Conducted 23 July)

    Squat: 315x5

    Bench: 225x5

    Deadlift: 335x5

    No PRs here, but Tim was able to apply force to the bar at loads close to his previous PRs.

    Texas Method W2D1: Volume Day

    Repeat of previous volume day due to illness recovery

    Squat: 275x5x5

    Bench: 200x5x5

    Deadlift: 275x5x2

    A bit of a grind today, but no moreso than a standard VD. If light day goes well and Tim gets some calories in, we should see PRs this VD.

    Texas Method W2D3: Intensity Day

    Squat: 325x5 (5PR!)

    Bench: 232.5x3 (3PR!)

    Deadlift: 345x0

    Something hitched up in Tim's upper back on deads today, after a really solid warmup and a good performance on squat. He's going to rest up and eat; it's likely that he's still slightly under the weather from his illness. He says he feels healthy now but slightly weak.

    Getting Back on Track

    Tim's life is on fire right now. Not in a bad way; he's just got lots going on. Third baby on the way soon, moving house, finishing grad school. We're having to play catch-as-catch-can right now. Today was a good day.

    Squat: 285x5x3

    Just some sets across to get back under the bar.

    Bench: 210x5x3 (Sets Across PR)

    Modest bench PR after 8 days out of the gym.

    Deadlift: 345x5 (5PR!)

    These went smoothly but there was some back rounding. Minor, but present.
