    2/12/23 - Sunday
    Outside 40° / Garage 41°

    BP H @ 5'
    45x5x2
    95x3
    135x1
    175x1
    205x1
    225x5x3 PR

Music — Monolord, Empress Rising; Duffy, Mercy; The Go-Go's, Lust To Love.

Notes — Lots and lots of DOMS from yesterday that shouldn't impact this single-lift session. A lot going on, but I wanted to squeeze this in during a small window of opportunity.
    - BP - Heavy sets across. And finally, 2 plates for 5x3! A bit of a surprise, as recovery (mainly sleep) still isn't going well, so I expected a repeat of Thursday's Press performance.

    2/14/23 - Tuesday
    Outside 30° / Garage 41°

    HDL @ 5'
    135x4
    185x2
    225x1
    275x1
    315x8

Music — Lil Yachty, Let's Start Here (album).

Notes — Still a very tight schedule, plus sleep recovery issues (worked a graveyard yesterday at the part-time gig that threw everything into whack). Packing like mad, on a plane in a few hours, but needed to get this one in.
    - HDL - A significant reset after the previous sessions (340x7; 335x4; 330x5+330x2). It was apparent that I needed more volume off the floor, so I added Cleans back in. But it was also apparent that my lower back wasn't up to the task, so I reset to a weight that I knew I could progress from. And I picked correctly. Had I gone 320x8, it would have been a painful grind for the last few, if I even completed the set. But I did get all 8 of these, even as the lower back started tightening up for the last few reps.

Granted, it has gone, seeing how it's now been two weeks since I've done any lifts.

    400x5 s

Music — The Absence vs Testament, Into The Pit; Jasta vs Megadeth, Holy Wars...The Punishment Due.

Notes — It has been 12 days since my last workout, but for good reason. I traveled to greet my first granddaughter into the world, then helped the parents adjust to this new world of theirs. We'll be headed back out there next week so that grandma can meet her, plus to visit and help some more. But needless to say, sleep and recovery during that time was minimal and I just never got around to doing any lifts, even though my son has a rack and some weights in the basement.
    - RP - Heavy set. While I didnt have any expectations that this will actually go, it wasn't completely out of the realm of possibility. So I tried. The lack of lifting reared its head during the warmups, as my hip flexors started talking at me after 275, but even the 365 went fine with hook grip. As did the five strapped workset reps (I probably could have got 1-2 more reps in). All good. Now tomorrow might be a different story as DOMS brutalizes me. But it's worth it.

Music — 311 vs The Cure, Love Song; Trivium, No Way Back Just Through; Obituary, Redneck Stomp.

    Notes
    - OP - Heavy sets across. Slight (94%) reset from the last heavy press session (2/9/23), which devolved quickly into a triples/get them however you can session. That performance, plus no presses of any form for the past two and a half weeks, necessitates a reset. The first set was a bit wobbly, but the next two were solid as I reminded myself to get completely tight under the bar. This was the right weight to reset to, as another 2.5lbs would have been a soul-crushing grind and another 5lbs would have been triples, I suspect. All good.
    - BP - Light sets across. All good.

    Notes
    - BP - Heavy sets across, with just a slight reset (97%) from the last heavy day of 2.5 weeks ago (225x5x3 on 2/12/23). This may be too ambitious, but the first set went quite well. As did the second. The third went as well, although there was a bit of odd side-to-side wobble on a couple of the last reps. All good.
    - OP - Light sets across. All good, although a bit wobbly at times, too.

Music — Man Must Die vs Stormtroopers Of Death, Milk; Oppressor vs Motley Crue, Looks That Kill; Samael, Dictate Of Transparency; Slayer, World Painted Blood.

Notes — Just for grins, I tried something different today, which was super-setting my warmups as much as possible with my limited plate supply. Any particular reason? No, other than I have two bars and the room to try. That's the beauty of maintenance season. While a fun little experiment, it required too much mental gymnastics to get through and it was about 40 minutes from the start before I got to my HDL workset. Overall, total workout time was about the same, so there really isn't anything to gain by doing it this way for these two lifts. But it did give me a chance to pull my fourth pair of 45s off the rack, which has really only happened once for a workout.
    - HDL - Heavy single set. My primary focus today, which is why it's first. The super-setted warmups didn't do my back any favors, but all eight reps went fine without concern.
    - SQ - Two heavy sets with two backoffs. This is quite ambitious, as I haven't squatted heavy since 2/11/23 ([350x5]+[320x5x2]). My initial thought was a 91% reset to ([320x5]+[300x5x2]), but then I started thinking about maintaining some intensity with a 350x3 followed by backoff sets, which then morphed into 350x3x2 with backoff sets. The first 350x3 went about 5 minutes after my HDL work set, which was too soon, as evidenced by my 350x2; I made the second rep, with serious doubts about a third, which makes sense considering the weeks that have passed since my last heavy squats. So I racked it and switched these to doubles. The second double was an exquisite grind that made me doubt trying a third set. But I attempted it, because I'm stubborn. And it was another exquisite grind that the last few inches to lockout seemed like it took a day, but it got there, followed by a very slow wobble towards the hooks. The 315x5 wasn't much better, but it got done. A second 315x5 would have been unlikely had I tried it, but this workout had already run overtime.

Lesson Learned — the total Volume of Intensity for these two lifts combined is more than I have done in quite awhile for a single workout. When I mean quite awhile, that probably means "ever", since I started alternating the heavy work sets for each lift early in 2021, when I was just tickling 340 for the DL and 320 for the SQ. All last year and this maintenance season the total tonnage of a workout could be the same or more, but it was focused on one of the lifts, with the other being a light day, or scheduled for another day entirely. I got away with it today (sort of), but it's not something that I could maintain on a weekly basis, which is something I learned in early 2021.
