Where exactly are your symptoms including side of the back, which hip or is it both, do you have pain or numbness/tingling or weakness in your legs? How long have you had this pain? Is the pain constant or intermittent? What makes your pain worse? What makes you pain better? Do you have any issues with bending forward, backward, or shifting your hips left or right?

    Lifting weights is not bad for you so it's not your fault you are hurting. I typically advise to use good form but the literature does not support the idea that poor form increases injury risk, but I'd say the jury is still out.
    Is there a lot of PT literature out there where the subjects are required to use poor form?

    So I went ahead and talked to another brain surgeon today. He told me that I don't have anything to worry about. Recommended that I strengthen my back by swimming. I'll take the deadlifting route though. Thanks for all the input. The tingling sensation on my left leg was due to me sitting on my wallet, appearently.
