    Hi Will,

Reaching out on behalf of a buddy who is trying to chart a path. Though not a starting strength guy, this friend trained with barbells from high school through his late 20s. Formerly a very strong guy, pound for pound.

A few years ago, he received a diagnosis of cubital tunnel syndrome in his left (dominant) hand/wrist. Since the initial diagnosis, he has had two surgeries, one in-situ release and then a revision subcutaneous anterior transposition. He has not felt that either was very successful, and is now speaking with a new specialist to consider a third procedure to stop any further regression.

My friend is extremely smart and as a former strength trainer, has a healthy skepticism of the entire medical establishment. I asked and received his permission to post the quick version of his story here to see if you or someone in your orbit can provide consultation, and if so, to understand the associated costs.

    Thanks much!

Repeated surgical procedures for relatively benign issues like an anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve likely isn’t going to prove more beneficial than what has already been achieved.

If one surgery doesn’t give the results you want, it would be hard to assume the next….and then the next…..and then the next surgeries will yield better benefits.

Depends on type of consultation that he wishes to have

I’ll relay the info and follow up if he wants to proceed.

But to answer the question of “why does he keep going back for surgeries,” he continues to experience degradation of grip strength and increased numbness when the hand gets worked. At this point, he’s trying to halt further deterioration—not regain any lost functionality.

Really appreciate the response and perspective.
