Sports are a great way to learn skills that they will use later on (mental and physical).
Personally, we started lifting at 14 or so (summer before Freshman year) for football, and I think that is a very good rough age to start training with barbells. We got real strong (by 16 year old standards) by the time we were 16-17 and were able to handle it by then.

FWIW, I have a female track sprint cyclist in my care who started in the gym at 12, we were very careful with her programming, once a week, squats, basically SS:BBT work with some other stuff mixed in. She's 14 and two weeks ago squatted 3x3 92.5kg and has a 1RM (tested) of 100kg - she did that easily and can probably lift more. Hasn't done her any harm at all and she's a bloody fast sprinter.
