One of the greats and a class act. I sure hope he pulls through this. Clean & jerked over 500 lbs while only weighing 181lbs. I believe he was a 7 time world champion. His son is a pretty good weightlifter also. This is a tragedy, best wishes to him and his family.

His total has still not been beaten even with the higher weight category.

He also smoked throughout his career.

And he managed to be a huge success despite having long limbs and a short torso, not optimal for a weightlifter. Definitely among the greatest.

    Randle,

I did not think about his total being higher then the new "beefed" up classes. But you are right. My favorite moment of his was when he totaled 400 or 405 at the Moscow Olympics. Incredible stuff.

Too bad about the smoking did not know that either.

Actually first heard of him in this forum. Unbelievably strong, and my tioska (a Russian word for two people sharing the same name).
    From Russian wikipedia:

He strated training in 1970 and was trained by his uncle Sergey.
After being a junior champion in 1975-1976 he joined the soviet national team in 1977.
He broke 43 world records (probably his own as well)! After a successful 1980 Olympics, he was considered a favorite in the L.A Olympics but didn't participate because of Soviet boycott of these games.
In 1985 he won his final world championship and entered politics.
In 1991 after the collapse of the USSR he decide to immigrate to the US, there he trained his son Norik.

I just heard from Norik Vardanyan. I am very glad to report Yuri is doing much better and is getting stronger every day. Does a lifter know any other way?
