Is Cody in Vibram 5-fingers or some other type of "barefoot" shoe? If so, why?
I've found the DVD to be extremely helpful in working through the areas that seem to be sticking points in my form. If you have a laptop, it's almost like having a coach right there while you are working out. I often watch while resting in between sets. Plus, it reinforces some of the cues you can use while coaching your son. My kid's seemed to benefit from seeing someone other than their lameass Dad demonstrate the various techniques.

Perhaps a wider stance would help to reduce amount of knee travel?
It might, if the stance was too narrow, and it's not.
I will second the DVD recommendation.
I second the SS DVD. I've had numerous instances where I just haven't been able to get someone to properly do a movement. If we're not making any progress, I'll force the person to watch the entire relevant chapter on the SS DVD. It has immensely helped every time.
In one instance, I wasn't able to get someone to do even a halfway decent power clean. It was pretty bad. After watching the chapter on the DVD, and with no additional input from me, his power clean immediately improved to what I'd call decent.
Does he have some work boots? Those are better than nothing or sneakers.
