I think that "pain tolerance" should be measured by how much pain one can take before going unconscious, not by how much one complains about the pain. Is that right?

The same kind that think it's worth it to be a human guinea pig in exchange for money.

Technically the money is said to be reimbursement for time and travel. The amount you can offer is a delicate issue with IRB, and while there are no hard and fast rules the more you offer the less it is seen as a reasomable reimbursment and the more it is considered to be a form of coersion of the poor and desperate to participate in something that is against their best interests. There are always people who do it solely because of the money, and as a grad student it can be enough to for a couple of weeks go from eating like a grad student to eating well.
