Does he let go of the bar or what?

I am confused, do you have any idea what is going on here?

I surely don't want to drop the bar like that in accident.

Looks like his wrists flexed. Don't let this happen if you are benching without rack protection. Bench pressing can be dangerous.

    How can this be prevented?

Control your grip like you are very serious about it.

I saw a guy drop an empty bar on his face today, when he he was trying to rack it. There was blood. Bench pressing is dangerous.

It CAN be dangerous. It doesn't have to be.

In a meet, it should be standard to at least have a mechanism (power rack, safeties) preventing total crushing of the chest and face...

What are you, the Unites States Senate? How many times has this happened in a meet? Yet we should DO something?

I dropped my iphone on my face the other day. No blood, but it was rather unpleasant.

    Default Pro-spot bench press

    starting strength coach development program
My gym has a pro-spot. Basically a bar that is suspended on cables. It is free to move in all dimensions. Hand conductivity releases it, lack of of hand conductivity locks it. While not competition legal, and not exactly like a free bar, it's pretty good. I like that you don't have to reach behind your head for the bar. You start lined up.

In any case it would have prevented this accident and their are hard stops.

Anyone have an opinion or ever used a prospot? Is this the future for the risk adverse?
