    Default Patellar Cartiledge Transplant

    Coach Rip,
About three years ago my wife had the cartilage on her patella transplanted. Have you ever worked with anyone who had a similar procedure? She maintains she cannot do squats, yet "manages" to do lunges and other exercises. I have been working to convince her about the benefits of more focused strength training, but she continues repeat her surgeons words, "squats are bad", yet she does single leg presses and other exercises.
Short version, if you've dealt with similar procedures, aside from the litany of great personal successes, e.g. Brian Jones, what techniques/examples have you used with them?
    Thanks for any insights.

Sounds like an exotic procedure, never heard of it. But it also sounds like your wife is not prepared to reason with you here, about patellar function and its role in knee mechanics. Not everybody is capable of reasoning, and entire cultures have been built on this principle since The Dawn of Time. Good luck.

Until you can get her to actually think about how the body works, you're not going to convince her of anything. As it stands, her surgeon told her something, and his word is the Gospel truth.

Maybe she just needs to hear this from somebody who isn't you, because doing squats means accepting that you are right, and she is wrong.

If the guy at planet fitness with 'personal trainer' written on his back was to tell her that squats are good for her knees, she'd probably be in the smith machine doing half squats in no time, because she doesn't mind being proven wrong by him, because he's supposed to know more about this stuff than her.

Also, have you actually shown her Brian Jones' presentation? It's much harder to make the argument that 'squats are bad' after watching that.
