Movies designed to win Oscars and virtue signal.

When it comes to more mainstream movies (especially movies with 9 digit budgets) my guess is that efforts are made to make movies less offensive and in so doing the movies will be less political, since you may not want to alienate half your potential audience from the get-go.
Hector, didn't you see Star Wars: The Last Jedi?

That being said, I've always thought that the good sci-fi was supposed to be some kind of social/political/moral allegory. The point though was to ask you a question, not tell you the answer. Star Trek was masterful at this, Gene Roddenberry's politics aside.

Black Panther is now on Netflix. Easily one of the best MCU movies to date. I'm also trying to find time for Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut, as I really enjoyed the Director's Cut.

I keep hearing this from many people, but I thought it was decidedly "meh". Winter Soldier is still the best overall, with GotG probably the most entertaining. Black Panther was just formulaic in my opinion. But I know I am in the vast minority, I just don't know why.

I did. But couldn't tell you what it's about. All the recent ones blended into one shitty amalgamation in my mind.
I enjoyed them while I watched them, but they were like fast food. That one where they released the race animals in the casino town was overtly preachy. You have a point on that one.

    Ant Man is underrated.

I've seen it once and also came away with meh. I then started seeing all the great reviews and have decided to watch it again and attempt to see what I missed. It is queued up for tonight or tomorrow.

I actually enjoyed the villain in Black Panther far more than any of the others from the MCU. This might have been one of the least formulaic in my opinion, but doesn't have to be your cup of tea. Still not a waste of two hours, especially with its Netflix release.

Aside from that I recently rewatched Infinity War and Spiderman: Homecoming. I came away liking them more the second time than the first. Still don't have Marvel fatigue yet.

No love for Thor: Ragnarok? My favourite Marvel film by far and a nice surprise based on how appalling the first two Thor films were. Really funny and great characters.

Mission Impossible: Fallout is one of the best action films of the last decade. Definitely a must-see. So much fun.

I haven't seen the previous films in the franchise. Does this one work by itself?

Very little context needed. Some things you won't get but as a stand alone it's damn good. I would recommend watching the most recent one Rogue Nation, it'll help you get a little more out of it (and it's just lots of fun).
