Nick, the Gary Oldman version is absolutely superb. His acting is perfect, just perfect subtlety in every scene. The casting is top notch. An amazing movie, very little “action” scenes but the story just propels forward. I will stop there but damn I loved it and it got better each time I watched it.
Watched Alice, Sweet, Alice tonight, an American giallo about a troubled young girl who many suspect is responsible for several murders. In true giallo fashion there are many twists, turns, and red herrings, and of course, many stabbings by a masked, gloved mystery person. Not quite as stylized as some of the Italian giallos, but a good thriller and interesting until the very end.
What is a "giallo"?
So, I recently learned this myself, giallo is a genre of Italian horror movies that became popular in the 60's and 70's, basically precursor to the "slasher" movies of the 80's. The giallo is usually a murder mystery that features a nameless, faceless killer, usually wearing black gloves and armed with some type of bladed weapon, who stalks and kills in a highly stylized way, and usually the mystery is solved and the killer revealed right at the very end, usually with some type of twist.
Some popular examples are the movies Bird With the Crystal Plumage, Blood and Black Lace, Tenebre, and some notable directors are Dario Argento and Mario Bava.
"Giallo" the term means yellow in Italian, as many of the films are based on pulp crime novels printed on cheat yellow paper.
I have only seen around 5 giallos so far, but The Eyes of Laura Mars is another American giallo starting Tommy Lee Jones and Faye Dunaway, and I really liked that one.
Italian for “yellow,” they are flicks that push the limit as to what the Italian censors would allow in the late 1960s and into the ‘70s. Lots of gratuitous nudity and violence. Some of them skirted the line with pornography.
I searched the forum and didn’t see it mentioned, which surprised me ….. Midnight Run with DeNiro and Charles Groden is really entertaining. On Netflix now for anyone interested. Movies are not made like this today.
Also watched The Big Short (2nd time seeing it) this weekend and was highly entertained. Also on Netflix.
McRaney's from here. Like a few minutes down the road in Collins, MS. Corbin's Texan iirc. Yankees usually can't tell the difference between southern, Appalachian, and Texan accents so they probably figured nobody would notice- they'd just sound "country." Which is yes, amusing.
Fucking Yankees. Hard not to hate them.
