Has anyone got any intel on the re-release of 2001: A Space Odyssey?

All I know is that the new print was made directly from the original 70mm--it is not a remaster, so there is no color correcting or changes of any kind, so that it is exactly as Kubric made it. It's going to be released to select theaters, so that means you'll probably have to go to someplace like Dallas to see it. The 4k edition comes out this fall and will be a copy of this new print.

Well, crap, from the L.A. Times:

"Moviegoers eager to share this experience do not have long to wait. After its May 13 debut in Cannes, "2001" opens May 18 for limited runs in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and San Francisco, with Hollywood's Arclight scheduling virtually round-the-clock screenings starting at 9 a.m."

You can only see it in the four worst cities in America. Fall release is TBD, originally, though, it was supposed to release tomorrow. But Cannes.

Jesus. I'll just watch it again at home.

I just tried to book tickets at the Cinerama Dome (now the Hollywood Arclight). This is the beautiful theatre I saw it at as a kid when it first came out.

Showings in the dome are sold out. The only seats where it’s available are at the little “cineplex” rooms in the theatre. Why would I pay to see a 70mm print in a room like that?

    Pass.

I don't think they appreciate the demand for this thing.

I know. They’re screening it frequently for a week. Only two of all of those times are in the dome. I’m sure it’s so they can run “Book Club” without a break.

This is why I bought a nice TV.
